We’re often so much more understanding of everyone else than we are of ourselves.

Someone else is tired? “You’ve had a lot going on.”
We’re tired? “Why can’t I just get on with it?”

Someone else makes a mistake? “Don’t worry, everyone does.”
We make one? We replay it for approximately 6–8 working days. 😅

That inner voice can become such a habit that we barely notice how harsh it is.

I wrote about why we do this - and why being a little kinder to yourself isn’t about letting yourself off the hook, but can actually help you cope, change and move forward.

The blog is on my website now - link in bio.

Anxious?

Have you tried… Not worrying?

Thanks. Never thought of that. 🤪

Your brain isn’t worrying because it’s choosing to.

It’s worrying because it thinks it’s protecting you.

When your primitive brain senses a threat, it throws out “What if…?” thoughts to try to keep you safe.

That’s why arguing with every anxious thought rarely works.

Instead of asking:

“How do I stop worrying?”

Try asking:

“How can I help my brain feel safe?”

Because when your brain starts to feel safer, those thoughts usually become much quieter too.

Most people think people pleasing is just about being “too nice.” But often it’s much more than that.

It’s an anxious brain trying to avoid conflict, rejection or letting someone down.

When your brain has learnt that keeping other people happy keeps you safe, saying “no” can feel surprisingly uncomfortable. Not because you’re weak. Not because you’re a pushover. But because your brain is doing exactly what it thinks it needs to do to protect you.

The good news? Brains can learn.

You don’t have to stop being kind. You don’t have to become a different person.

You can still be caring, thoughtful and compassionate… while also learning that it’s okay to have boundaries and that not everyone has to be happy with you all the time.

Have you ever managed a difficult day, a social event or a stressful situation surprisingly well… only to feel anxious, tearful or completely exhausted afterwards?

Anxiety doesn’t always arrive before the thing.

Sometimes your brain shifts into coping mode and helps you keep going until you’re somewhere that feels safer. It’s only then that the tension, emotion and physical symptoms begin to surface.

That delayed crash can look like irritability, headaches, shakiness, overthinking, wanting to be alone or suddenly feeling completely drained.

It doesn’t mean you’re reacting “for no reason.”

Sometimes your mind and body are simply catching up with everything they’ve been holding.

Do more of what you love. 🍦

We spend so much of life doing what we have to do that it’s easy to forget to make time for the things we simply enjoy.

An ice cream. A swim. A walk. A coffee in the sunshine. Music turned up loud. Reading a book. Pottering in the garden or having a proper laugh with someone you love…

Those little moments aren’t frivolous. Every time you genuinely enjoy something, your brain gets evidence that life isn’t just stress, pressure and getting through the next thing. Those moments help tip the balance back towards feeling calmer, lighter and more like yourself.

So here’s your reminder today…

Do more of what you love!!

Sometimes you don’t need to analyse why you feel the way you do. You just need to give your brain and body a little help to shift out of it.

Get outside. Move your body. Eat something. Put your phone down. Take a shower. Breathe slowly. Reduce the noise around you. Do one small, manageable thing. Talk to someone. Put some music on. Do something that makes you laugh.

None of these things magically fix everything. But small things can change what’s happening in your brain and body, and sometimes feeling even 10% better is enough to make everything else feel a little more manageable.

What would you add to the list?

Sometimes anxiety does need us to take a step towards the thing we’re scared of. But when the alarm system is already screaming, pushing harder isn’t always the answer.

Sometimes we need to settle the alarm first. Then take the next small step.

Anxiety isn’t about avoiding everything... but it isn’t always about forcing your way through either.

Share this with someone who might need to understand that difference.

The more we understand our brain, the less we need to criticise ourselves.

So many of the habits we beat ourselves up for are simply our brain looking for a quick way to feel better.

The aim isn't to never scroll, never eat chocolate or never enjoy a glass of wine. It's to notice when we're relying on those things to cope.

Next time you catch yourself reaching for a quick fix, pause for a second and ask:

"What is my brain actually needing right now?"

Sometimes the answer isn't more dopamine.

Sometimes it's rest.
Connection.
Movement.
Food.
A break.
Or simply a moment to breathe.

Understanding your brain is always kinder than judging it.

Mondays have a funny way of making us feel like we should have the whole week planned, organised and under control before we've even had our first coffee...

(Although, full disclosure... I'm writing this having already had about 2½ coffees. ☕️😂)

Whether you're heading into meetings, juggling family life, running your own business or simply trying to keep on top of everything, it's easy to feel like you're carrying the weight of the whole week before it's even begun.

So here's your reminder...

You don't have to carry the whole week on your shoulders today.

Just begin.

One conversation. One task. One decision. One step at a time.

The rest has a way of falling into place.

I used to think the weekend was my chance to catch up.

Catch up on the house, the washing, the life admin, the jobs I'd been putting off all week.

The trouble is, I never actually felt caught up. There was always another job waiting, and by Sunday evening I'd often wonder where the weekend had gone.

I hear a similar thing from so many of my clients.

We tell ourselves we'll relax once the house is tidy, once we've replied to that message, once we've got ahead for next week.

But "once" keeps moving.

Of course, there are things that need doing. I'm certainly not suggesting we ignore real life! But if every spare moment is spent trying to catch up, our brain never really gets the chance to recover.

One of the questions I sometimes encourage clients to ask themselves is:

"What does my brain need today?"

Not just...

"What else can I get done?"

Sometimes your brain might need a walk, a proper laugh with a friend, an hour in the garden, a good book or simply twenty minutes where you don't feel guilty for sitting down.

The washing will still be there tomorrow.

Looking after your brain isn't something you have to earn. It's one of the things that helps you cope with everything else.

I hope you find a little time to recharge this weekend. 🤍
