Serenity of Mind Therapy

Serenity of Mind Therapy Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice with clinics in Haywards Heath, West Sussex and Crowborough, East Sussex. Hello, I’m Kevin.

Following a 20-year+ career working in Product Management and Human Resources in mostly large private and public sector organisations in Sussex and Surrey, I retrained to become a therapist and founded Serenity of Mind Therapy. I am a qualified psychodynamic counsellor/therapist with a BACP accredited diploma in psychodynamic counselling and a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, offering online and face-to-

face sessions for those experiencing all kinds of issues from relationship difficulties, grief, depression and anxiety, all the way to complex PTSD from trauma and childhood sexual, psychological and physical abuse. I am passionate about helping and guiding clients toward greater fulfilment and progress on their journey toward resolution, healing and growth, aligning with my practice name – Serenity of Mind. I deeply value the transformative potential of counselling and therapy, which is rooted in my own firsthand experiences. During my three-year training, I embarked on a personal therapeutic journey, which underscored the importance of finding someone who provided a safe, supportive and confidential space. My aim is to build an accepting and trusting relationship where you can openly and honestly talk and explore your feelings, thoughts, behaviours and concerns without judgement. I feel creating such an environment is crucial when navigating our inner landscapes and especially when exploring complex issues like historical trauma or various forms of abuse. I recognise the significance of delving into the underlying causes of your struggles and offer compassionate support as we explore and unravel the complexities together that may be contributing to your distress and impacting your life currently. Through a blend of insight, analysis, and compassionate support, I provide a space where you can feel both understood and challenged. My counselling room in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, is based within historic Oathall House, set within peaceful grounds with private parking and bathroom facilities. This location is approximately 10 minutes from junction 10a on the M23, a 20-minute drive from Crawley and a 30-minute drive from Brighton. It is also well located for residents of Burgess Hill, Horsham, East Grinstead, Hassocks, Hurstpierpoint, Ditchling and other Mid-Sussex towns and villages. My counselling room in Crowborough, East Sussex, is based within the modern Basepoint business centre, with waiting area, bathroom facilities and free parking available in the Waitrose car park next door (up to three hours). This location is approximately a 10-minute drive from Tunbridge Wells on the A26, a 15-minute drive from Uckfield and a 20-minute drive from East Grinstead. It is also well located for residents of Rotherfield, Mayfield, Wadhurst, Nutley, Maresfield, Buxted, Newick, Forest Row, Heathfield and other High Weald area towns and villages.

🌙🤖 It's not that the chatbot understands you. It's that it never gets tired of you.

No sighing. No clock watching. No memory of the time you were unreasonable about something small three years ago.

That's the pull, and it's a completely human one.

In my latest blog, I look at what's actually being called "AI psychosis", when a screen becomes our main confidant, old questions about whether we'll be tolerated on our worst days, dressed up in new technology. And why the friction we try to avoid in other people might be exactly what helps us grow.

I explore why it feels so convincing, what we're really asking for underneath it, and why a relationship that only ever reflects you back can't quite do what a real one can. Read more here:

😮‍💨 Burnout doesn't usually mean you've stopped caring. It often means you've been performing competence for so long that you've forgotten it was ever a performance.

Somewhere back down the line, many of us learned a role. The capable one. The one who copes. The one who doesn't make a fuss.

And a performance that never gets an interval is exhausting in a way ordinary tiredness isn't, because you're not just doing the work of your day. You're also doing the work of appearing fine while you do it.

In my latest blog, I explore burnout through a psychodynamic lens, not as a productivity problem to be solved with better time management, but as an internal strike, one that's often protecting you from questions like: who am I if I'm not the one who copes?

💔 "It's easier if I just keep this to myself."

It's one of the saddest beliefs I encounter in therapy.

Not because it's true.

Because so many people genuinely believe it.

When emotional pain becomes overwhelming, our minds can become incredibly convincing. They tell us we're a burden. That nobody would understand. That asking for help will only make things worse.

Yet I've found the opposite is often true.

The moment someone finally speaks the thoughts they've been carrying in silence is often the moment they discover they don't have to carry them quite so alone anymore.

My latest blog explores suicidal thoughts through a psychodynamic lens, looking beyond the crisis itself to understand the shame, loneliness, trauma and unconscious patterns that can leave someone feeling trapped.

Because understanding the pain beneath the thoughts is often where hope begins. Read more here:

If you're struggling, or if you're worried about someone close to you, please don't try to manage it alone. Reaching out isn't a sign of weakness; it's often the bravest thing a person can do.

🤔 One of the questions I'm asked most often is:

"How will I know therapy is working?"

It's a fair question. Most people imagine the answer sounds something like less anxiety, better emotional regulation or improved confidence.

Those things certainly matter. But after years of sitting with clients, I've noticed something rather different.

People rarely tell me, "I've finally mastered emotional regulation."

Instead, they say...

"I didn't argue with my partner the way I normally would."
"I finally said no."
"I enjoyed seeing friends."
"I laughed."
"I've started dating again."

Those ordinary moments often tell us far more about psychological change than any clinical term ever could. In my latest blog, I've been reflecting on the real value of therapy and why meaningful change usually arrives quietly, woven into the ordinary moments of everyday life rather than dramatic breakthroughs. 💔 We often think separation or divorce is about losing another person.

In therapy, I frequently discover that people are grieving something much bigger.

The future they imagined.
The routines they built.
The identity they quietly created within the relationship.

One of the things that strikes me most is how often people arrive believing they need to "move on", when what they really need is permission to understand what has happened, not just between themselves and their former partner, but within themselves.

In my latest blog, I've been reflecting on separation, divorce and the surprisingly complicated process of rediscovering who we are when a relationship ends.

Because sometimes the end of a relationship isn't simply about saying goodbye to another person.

It's about learning not to lose yourself in the process. Read more here:

🎵 Sometimes a song arrives at exactly the right moment.

Whilst sitting on a sun lounger overlooking the Aegean Sea recently, You're On Your Own, Kid by Taylor Swift found its way into my headphones and, somewhat unexpectedly, into my thoughts about therapy.

One of the privileges of this work is noticing how often adults still carry younger versions of themselves. The child who needed comfort. The teenager who longed to belong. The adult who became very good at coping.

Many of us spend years trying to become somebody whilst quietly leaving parts of ourselves behind.

In my latest blog, I reflect on Taylor Swift's song through a psychodynamic lens, exploring the inner child, adolescence, letting go, and the curious process of becoming ourselves. Read more here:

Sometimes moving forward isn't about reinventing ourselves at all. Sometimes it's about finding the people we once were and inviting them back in.

🏳️‍🌈 What does it mean to truly belong?

As Pride Month comes around each year, I often find myself thinking less about celebration and more about belonging.

Not belonging because you've edited yourself to fit in.

Not belonging because you've learned which parts of yourself are acceptable.

But belonging because you no longer feel the need to hide.

Inspired by Madonna's recent Pride appearance in Times Square, I've been reflecting on why she has remained such an important figure within LGBTQIA+ communities for so many years.

The answer, I suspect, has less to do with music and more to do with visibility.

Many of us spend years learning how to present versions of ourselves that feel safer, more acceptable, or less likely to invite rejection. The psychological cost of that can be surprisingly high.

In my latest blog, I explore belonging, authenticity, chosen family, identity, and why Pride remains such an important reminder that we all deserve spaces where we can be fully ourselves. Read more here:

🤔 Who looks after the men who spend their lives looking after everyone else?

One of the things I've noticed over the years is that many men don't come to therapy because they've suddenly fallen apart.

More often, they arrive because they've spent years holding things together.

They are the reliable ones. The problem-solvers. The people others depend upon.

From the outside, life may look successful enough. Work is functioning. Relationships are carrying on. Responsibilities are being met.

Yet underneath, there is often a quiet exhaustion. A sense of having become disconnected from themselves somewhere along the way.

For Men's Mental Health Week 2026, I've been reflecting on the emotional burden that can come from always being needed, and why being valued for what you do is not always the same as feeling known for who you are. Read more here:

🤔 Are we losing our ability to tolerate grey areas?

It sometimes feels as though modern life demands that we choose a side.

You’re either for something or against it.
Right or wrong.
Good or bad.

Increasingly, there seems to be less room for uncertainty, nuance, or simply saying, “I’m not entirely sure.”

As a psychodynamic therapist, I’ve been reflecting on how this mirrors something we see psychologically called splitting, our tendency, particularly when anxious or overwhelmed, to divide people and ideas into extremes.

The trouble is that life rarely lives at the extremes.

Most of us carry mixed feelings about the people we love. Most important issues contain shades of grey. And perhaps psychological maturity is less about certainty and more about developing the capacity to tolerate complexity.

In my latest blog, I explore political polarisation, black-and-white thinking, social media, curiosity, and why reclaiming the middle ground may be more important than ever in modern Britain. Read more here:

🧭 We tend to think we travel with passports, backpacks and questionable budgeting decisions.

Psychologically speaking… we often travel with rather more than that.

Attachment patterns.
Family roles.
Old griefs.
Ways of coping that once made perfect sense.

Watching the recent series of Race Across the World, I found myself thinking less about routes and rankings, and more about what happens when comfort, routine, emotional escape routes… and occasionally reliable transport… disappear.

What gets revealed when people are tired, dependent on one another, emotionally exposed and very far from home?

In my latest blog, I explore Race Across the World 2026 through a psychodynamic lens, reflecting on trauma, male identity, childhood loss, attachment, family dynamics and the emotional baggage many of us quietly carry. Read more here:
