Poor sleep and emotional wellbeing can become closely connected. Worry may make it harder to rest, while tiredness can make everyday pressures feel more difficult to manage.

If sleep difficulties are affecting your mood, relationships or daily life, therapy can offer space to explore what may be keeping the cycle going and find an approach suited to you. The Surrey Centre offers confidential therapy in person and online.

September is Su***de Prevention Month.

Talking about su***de with care does not create the thought; it can help someone feel less alone and make space for support.

If you are worried about someone, you might begin simply: “I’ve noticed you don’t seem yourself. How are you really?”

Listen without rushing to fix things, take what they say seriously and help them connect with support.

If someone’s life is at immediate risk, call 999 or go to A&E. For urgent mental-health help, call NHS 111.

Back-to-school anxiety is not always obvious. It may look like irritability, headaches or tummy aches, trouble sleeping, repeated questions or wanting to avoid school conversations.

Helpful first steps can include gently returning to a routine, validating the worry without amplifying it, breaking the first day into smaller steps and planning a calm point of connection afterwards. If worry is persistent or is affecting sleep, eating or everyday life, professional support may help.

For someone recovering from an eating disorder, rest can be an active, purposeful part of treatment.

Reducing or pausing exercise may support physical repair and create space to challenge compulsive rules—but it can also feel uncomfortable.

Recovery-focused rest is not laziness or failure. It is a compassionate choice made in service of health.

If this applies to you, follow the individual guidance of your GP or treatment team, and seek support rather than making major changes alone.

Self-care is not always a bubble bath or a perfect morning routine. Sometimes it is replying to the message you have been avoiding, taking medication as prescribed, eating something, cancelling a non-essential plan, stepping outside, asking for help or going to bed.

Kind boundaries can be both warm and clear. If finding the words is difficult, try:

• “I can’t commit to that right now.”
• “I need some time before I answer.”
• “I’m happy to help, but I can’t do it today.”
• “That doesn’t work for me.”

A boundary does not always need a long defence. It can protect your energy, your relationships and the things that matter most to you.

Therapy is personal, and the relationship matters. It is okay to ask a therapist about their approach, their experience and what sessions may feel like. It is also okay if you need time to decide. The Surrey Centre team brings different backgrounds and ways of working, and we will help you explore the most suitable option currently available. If you are considering therapy, you are welcome to start with a private, no-pressure enquiry.

Starting or returning to university is exciting, but changes in routine, surroundings and support networks can feel challenging when you are living with an eating disorder.

You do not have to manage this transition alone. The Surrey Centre has therapists who specialise in eating disorders, as well as experienced dietitians and nutritionists. Together, we can provide compassionate support to help you maintain your recovery, navigate university life and respond early if things begin to feel difficult. We can also support your family during this period of change.

Online sessions are available, so you can receive consistent support wherever you are studying.

Therapy myth or fact: “I need to know exactly what to talk about before my first session.”

It is a myth. You can begin with uncertainty, silence, a recent event or simply the sense that something needs attention. A therapist can help you find a starting point; you do not need to arrive with a perfectly organised story.
