Muscle strength. Tai chi can improve both lower-body strength and upper-body strength. When practiced regularly, tai chi can be comparable to resistance training and brisk walking. "Although you aren't working with weights or resistance bands, the unsupported arm exercise involved in tai chi strengthens your upper body," says internist Dr. Gloria Yeh, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School. "Tai chi strengthens both the lower and upper extremities and also the core muscles of the back and abdomen." Tai chi can boost upper- and lower-body flexibility as well as strength. Tai chi improves balance and, according to some studies, reduces falls. Proprioception — the ability to sense the position of one's body in space — declines with age. Tai chi helps train this sense, which is a function of sensory neurons in the inner ear and stretch receptors in the muscles and ligaments. Tai chi also improves muscle strength and flexibility, which makes it easier to recover from a stumble. Fear of falling can make you more likely to fall; some studies have found that tai chi training helps reduce that fear. Depending on the speed and size of the movements, tai chi can provide some aerobic benefits. If your clinician advises a more intense cardio workout with a higher heart rate than tai chi can offer, you may need something more aerobic as well.

What if one hour of slowing down could help you move better?

Tai Chi begins with something deceptively simple: learning how to stand, breathe, relax and become more aware of how your body moves.

In my Tai Chi Meditation & Basics workshop we explore standing meditation, alignment, balance, gentle joint mobility and relaxed movement.

These are also skills that become increasingly valuable as we get older.

For me, healthy ageing isn't about doing less — it's about continuing to move, learn and gently challenge ourselves.

☯️ New to Tai Chi? Start with Meditation & Basics.
☯️ Want to learn Chen Tai Chi too? Add the Chen 18 Form workshop and enjoy both.

What is one of the biggest fears many people have as they get older?

Losing their mobility. Losing their balance. Losing the confidence to walk freely and independently.

The good news is that our bodies are designed to move. They adapt remarkably well when we practise movement regularly. The earlier we invest in our mobility, balance, flexibility, and strength, the greater the rewards in later life.

Tai Chi is much more than exercise. It is a practice of awareness that helps you reconnect with your body, improve balance, increase flexibility, strengthen your legs, and move with greater confidence and ease.

Many people begin Tai Chi because they want to stay active. They continue because they discover how good it feels to move well, stand tall, and trust their body again.

Do not wait until mobility becomes a challenge. Start building the habits today that your future self will thank you for.

Whether you are completely new to Tai Chi or returning after a break, why not come along and experience it for yourself?

Join a Happy Tai Chi class today and take the first step towards better balance, mobility, flexibility, and wellbeing.

Have you ever been curious about Tai Chi… and wondered what it actually feels like to try it?

This workshop is a simple and welcoming way to find out.
You do not need any experience.
You do not need to be flexible or fit.
You simply need a willingness to explore something new.

This Meditation and Chen Tai Chi Taster Workshop is designed for beginners - a calm, supportive space where you can slow down, breathe, and gently connect with your body.

Together, we will explore:
Simple, easy-to-follow Tai Chi movements
Standing meditation to help you relax and reset
Gentle guidance on posture, balance, and breathing
How to move with less tension and more ease
There is no pressure to get anything “right.”
This is not about perfection — it is about experience.

As you move through the session, you may begin to notice:
A sense of calm replacing busyness
Your body feels lighter and more relaxed
Your mind is becoming clearer and quieter
A natural improvement in balance and awareness

Tai Chi is often described as “meditation in motion”…
And this workshop is your opportunity to experience that for yourself.

Think of it as opening a door —
and simply taking a gentle step inside.

If this feels like something you would enjoy, you are warmly invited to join us.

Happy Chinese New Year.

As we welcome the Year of the Fire Horse, may you move through life as you move through Tai Chi, grounded in your stance, fluid in your transitions, and powerful without force.

Let your energy rise like fire, yet remain guided by calm awareness. Step forward with courage, pivot with wisdom, and when life changes direction, shift your weight smoothly and continue the flow.

May this year bring strong roots, an open heart, a clear mind, and unstoppable forward momentum.
