Beaconwild began in June 1959 as the Abbeyfield Brighton & Hove Society, with a house in Brighton. The first Eastbourne house opened in 1962. At one stage there were four Brighton & Hove houses and three in Eastbourne. The Heathfield house opened in 1999. The St Leonards house was acquired in 2011, shortly before the merger that created Abbeyfield South Downs. Over the years, we grew steadily, welcoming the Tunbridge Wells Society in 2016, Alfriston & District in 2017, and Worthing in 2023. In 2019, we began redeveloping our Holdenhurst site in Heathfield, opening the doors in 2022. At the launch event, we buried a time capsule beneath the iconic monkey puzzle tree – a symbol of growth and permanence. Our roots lie in the work of Richard Carr-Gomm, the 20th-century social reformer. He recognised the impact of loneliness and isolation on people’s lives. His belief that everyone deserves connection and community continues to guide us. As we’ve grown, so has our independence. Today, Beaconwild stands as an established not-for-profit organisation with decades of experience in providing sheltered housing for older people. We’ve evolved from our Abbeyfield heritage. We are a forward-thinking organisation with purpose: creating homes where independence and community go hand in hand. Where people can feel safe, connected, and valued.

Lade House, Eastbourne is a converted cottage-style property offering eight studio rooms with en-suite facilities. A light and airy home, with accessible gardens which back onto Gildredge Park, home to tennis courts, bowling greens and a beautiful rose garden.

There is so much to do in the area; Lade House is walking distance to the Beacon shopping centre, library and train station and is close to a bus stop with regular buses into the town. As a seaside town, we’re not far from the seafront where you’ll find an array of Victorian hotels, its pier and bandstand, and stretches of beach from Sovereign Harbour to the east and Beachy Head to the west.

At Lade House, tenants suggest menu ideas, help to organise summer garden parties, and share ideas at our regular house meetings.

This is the perfect place to find comfort, companionship, and security. A chance to make new friends at morning coffee or during meal times; an important time when tenants come together to catch up and have a chat, whilst enjoying great food and excellent company.

At Beaconwild Hove, tenants enjoyed a Spanish style buffet washed down with sangria,

There was sunshine, dancing and laughter and entertainment from a fantastic singer.

One special visitor who enjoyed the day, was the daughter of one of our tenants, who travelled all the way from the isle of White to suprise her mum.

Here we have Spanakopita with new potatoes, served at Beamsley House, Eastbourne.

Nutritious meals are standard in our houses, taking the stress and effort out of daily cooking.

There’s no need for shopping, meal planning, or cooking for one when you live with us; everything is thoughtfully prepared to ensure balanced, nourishing food every day. And tenants input their ideas into the menu plan too, if there's something you fancy.

Mealtimes are a highlight of the day, offering the chance to sit together, enjoy a scrumptious meal, and socialise with others in a warm and friendly setting. It’s about more than food; it’s about comfort, connection, and community.

Cadogan House, Tunbridge Wells enjoyed a Summer house party and marked Mark’s 57th birthday on Saturday the 25th of July.
A wonderful time was had by all and the
entertainment was provided, on a voluntary basis, by Uke Soundz.

Doesn’t this look fantastic? At Beaconwild, Hove, talented May, incorporated the Beaconwild logo, into her cake design. This was all handmade and was a warm up for her cake creation for the Beaconwild Hove Garden Party.

A fabulous time was had by all our tenants at our summer barbecue at Beachside in Worthing. There was also a very yummy fruit punch on offer. Cheers!🍹
