Don't feel guilty though, it loves to grow where the ground is really compacted, such as paths and walkways, field entrances and disturbed open ground. It is very easy to miss, being pretty low to the ground usually, often covered in dust from walkers and blending in really well with the soil/gravel its growing in. Look down carefully next time you walk across the edges of a car park, a trampled dusty path or field gateway etc....
