The Importance of Sleep and Injury

Sleep is of course essential for us for many reasons but perhaps injury prevention and recovery isn't thought of as a potential benefit when we consider why we are injured or how we recover from injury.

So here are a few punchy points to make showing the importance of sleep from an injury perspective:

• Tissue Repair & Regeneration: During deep sleep, the body increases blood flow to muscles and releases growth hormones, enabling efficient oxygen and nutrient delivery to repair and remodel tissues.

• Pain Regulation: Poor sleep interferes with the central nervous system's ability to regulate pain signals, lowering your threshold for discomfort and making existing MSK issues feel more severe

• Inflammation & Quality of sleep: Good quality deep sleep helps release anti-inflammatory molecules to control and reduce swelling whereas poor sleep does the opposite

• General Fatigue: Being more tired whether that be from poor sleep or stress or both can make muscles more tense, work harder to perform everyday activities and further drains your energy levels as ease of movement is reduced. Therefore this can lead you to the path of injury.

To summarise:

If the body isn't able to gain adequate/good sleep then it means that there potentially is more inflammation and tension in tissues. Prolonged periods of poor sleep will not only mean you don't adequately recover from that days stressors it can add to previous and build up leading you to significant injury, limiting the quality of healing and having much poorer recovery times.

There is vast sleep advice out there and lots of money making options for you to purchase that may not be of any benefit. Sleep is habitual and we can get stuck in cycles of poor sleep but the important thing is to make smaller changes initially to aid better adaption to better sleep.

We ourselves have plenty of advice to gain better sleep routines and feel free to enquire at your next appointment or reach out to us for a conversation about this.

Phone signal in Wickham has been extremely bad / non existent this week.

I have WiFi in clinic so if anything is coming through that then I should receive it ok but if your trying to get in touch and in Wickham it maybe difficult.

Also happy Friday everyone and Wickham square is experiencing very heavy footfall of people on Fridays so parking is limited so leave plenty of time if you can.

Have a great day everyone.

22/05/2026

Just a kind reminder that Wickham since the wonderful addition of Josie's has become extremely busy and parking is at a premium.

Please ensure you allow some time to get to appointments on time, especially on a Friday where it is very busy generally anyway.

This weeks wisdom post is from our sports massage therapist Jack (a little late this week but thought for the weekend ahead!).

Our approach, and certainly head therapist Tom says this everyday to his clients is; something is better than nothing!

This is why we approach our rehabilitation with great thought and consideration to optimise what you can do.

A lot of you can feel overwhelmed when seeing a therapist when they want to give you a fantastic program of exercises, but there are so many to do and fit in!

Here though we tend to select around 3 exercises we feel are the best starting exercises. We feel this better fits into your day and is musch easier to comit to. This bitesize approach is far more likely to yield results than 7+ exercises which, lets be honest, you might not do!

Here at Meon Valley Sports Injury Clinic we really do take our time to optimise every aspect of our care for you.

Small Simple exercise = Big results!

Today's Wednesday wisdom post is from our sports therapist Bayley.

Ball roll under the foot!! Why?

Bayley answers:

As we enter the spring and summer seasons of this year, I'm sure many people will be becoming more active in events and competitions. I'm also sure that just as I do, some of you also either forget to or simply don’t involve stretching as part of your pre or post warmups/cooldowns after physical activity, which can lead to a constant and repetitive buildup of muscle tightness in the posterior chain of your lower body.

A great, simple way to overcome this buildup of tightness can be done through a simple exercise of rolling a tennis ball (or a similar size/structured ball) under the base and heel of your foot.

Doing this exercise of simply applying a bit of pressure then rolling a ball under your foot for approximately 1-5 minutes twice a day allows for a self-performed myofascial release shown to be beneficial for ankle range of movement, tension relief, improvement of circulation, and even pain alleviation.

The best part of this exercise is how easy it is to perform; all you need is a small ball and a few minutes to help your body recover. Even better is that you don’t have to take the time out of your busy schedules or make room to perform this, as you can either do this while simply sitting on the couch relaxing or even while working/eating when you’re sitting down.

Many recent studies have also shown that this single exercise can help with muscle and pain relief in the lower back, meaning that this exercise is greatly beneficial to those who work desk jobs experiencing lower back pain or tightness and also runners who may be suffering from plantar fasciitis due to an increase in physical activity.

This exercise is not just limited to these individuals, as lower body tightness is apparent in a majority of individuals who play sports or exercise. Many individuals I’ve given this exercise to often start seeing results after just 1-2 weeks of doing a few minutes, twice a day on both feet.

Be sure to give this exercise a try if you feel as if you are an individual who relates to any of the previous issues mentioned.

So that this spring/summer, you are putting yourself and the health and recovery of your body first by looking after and doing what's best for it.

Believe me when I say your future self will be thanking your present self now for starting this journey and sticking to it!

Thursday Thought from Tom - Motion is Lotion!

As we missed Wednesday Wisdom we have Thursday thought this week!

Motion is Lotion, is a simple and very effective approach. Head therapist Tom will be saying this repeatedly to all his clients every day, but why?

Well just generally moving gets the body mobilising tissues and lubricating joints to reduce stiffness, promote range of movement and aid recovery.

By encouraging range of movement the body will start to trust pain free range, desensitise pain in these ranges and increase available range of movement. Always ensuring you never go into great pain, work within your pain free range of movement up to the point of discomfort, never into great pain.

The approach is especially important with those suffering from acute or chronic pain. As the body's natural response to pain is to immobilise, thus increasing stiffness, dysfunction and, ultimately, pain!

However by generally moving, although this can be uncomfortable to begin with, will have a great effect on such things as sciatica and osteoarthritis etc.

So keep moving, the body won't like long sustained periods of sitting, or standing.

If you want more advice and help then please feel free to reach out to our therapists about further tips and treatments to help you.
