I found this today… This is true and all staff at my school should feel proud. Sharon ###
Some schools closed today.
Some schools finished early.
And some schools stayed fully open.
For the staff in those schools, this hasn’t just been “a warm day.”
It has been children struggling in hot classrooms.
It has been blinds down, windows open, fans on, lights off, water bottles everywhere, shade breaks, quieter playtimes and constant checking.
It has been EYFS staff trying to keep very young children safe and settled.
It has been SEND staff supporting children who may not understand why routines have changed, why they feel uncomfortable, or why everything suddenly feels harder.
It has been parents being given the option to collect early — while staff still support the children who remain until the usual time.
It has been schools trying their best with fans, paddling pools, ice lollies, water sprays and whatever cooler spaces they can find.
And in some places, it has also been classrooms that have simply built up heat over two days and become extremely difficult to work in.
That matters.
Because when schools stay open in extreme heat, staff are right in the middle of making it work.
Keeping children calm.
Keeping children hydrated.
Adapting activities.
Reducing movement.
Spotting who is struggling.
Managing behaviour that gets harder when everyone is hot, tired and uncomfortable.
And somehow trying to stay patient while feeling absolutely cooked themselves.
So if your school stayed open today, this is just a little acknowledgement:
You didn’t “just get through a hot day.”
You helped children get through a very difficult one and that will have a BIG, POSITIVE impact on their physical health as well as their psychological wellbeing!
👉 THAT deserves to be recognised.
