Bach lived in a time when the pace of life was slower. There were no instant pings of news from around the world and the foundations of individual life were, to some extent, shielded from the rapid-fire demands on our emotions that we experience today through every 24-hour cycle.
Technology is sweeping through our lives and changing the way we live and work at a speed it is hard to keep track of. Political and economic influences sweep the world in a matter of hours changing how safe we feel.
It can be hard to find your balance.
Walnut is an interesting essence in this context. Bach created it to help shield people from the imbalances and fundamental shifts to mental, emotional and physical states. Teething, puberty, starting a new job, moving to a new home - regular experiences that bring disruption to our rhythms.
But it is, perhaps, the underlying ethos of the essence that is more interesting today.
Bach said, “We must gain our freedom absolutely and completely, so that all we do, our every action – nay even our every thought – derives its origin in ourselves, thus enabling us to live and give freely of our own accord, and of our own accord alone.”
It is an essence that calls us back to ourselves and asks us to live from our internal truths, rather than being bent out of shape by the powers or swells of opinion around us.
While life around us becomes increasingly connected and moves ever faster, Walnut offers a route back to our centres to find stability in ourselves, even when the world cannot offer it.
