Wood pigeons get me every time.
The moment I hear that soft, repetitive coo, I'm straight back to childhood. I couldn't even tell you exactly where or when, it's just there, immediate and warm, like a door opening onto somewhere safe.
It's one of the things I find endlessly fascinating about how the mind works. A sound, a smell, a piece of music, and you're not just remembering something, you're back there. The feeling is immediate and physical, not just a thought about the past but an actual return to it.
Which tells you something important: your nervous system doesn't experience memories as history. It experiences them as now. The good ones and the difficult ones alike.
That's why a particular aftershave can tighten your chest twenty years after someone wore it. Why a specific song can make you cry before you've even registered what it is. Why the smell of a hospital or a certain kind of cooking can change your mood in seconds without you choosing it.
Your body is keeping the record of everything. Every significant experience filed with its sensory detail attached, ready to replay the moment the trigger arrives.
Understanding that is the beginning of understanding so much about why you feel what you feel, when you feel it, apparently out of nowhere.
But today I just want to know the good ones.
What sound, smell or song drops you straight back into a happy memory? Tell me in the comments, I'd genuinely love to know. x
