Hertford Buddhist Meditation

Hertford Buddhist Meditation Part of the Triratna Buddhist Community. All welcome, including newcomers to meditation and non-Buddhists. Tuesday evenings: 7.15pm for 7.30pm start.

If lately, you have been feeling like you need to practice a relaxation technique, or find some peace of mind and make it a regular part of your life, why not try meditation? Meditation is a tried and tested method of achieving calm and concentration. At the Millbridge Room in Maidenhead Yard we practice meditation techniques that were taught by the Buddha in India over 2,500 years ago. Yet these

same practices are just as effective today as they were then. Regular practice of the Mindfulness of Breathing and the Development of Loving Kindness will enable you to stay calm, feel less stressed, be more patient and more understanding of others. Newcomers are welcome at our free Tuesday evening meditation meetings to try meditation and ask for advice from experienced meditators. You can come along to the first session which starts at 7.30pm (doors open at 7.15pm) and is designed for people who are new to meditation as well as people who have some experience. You can stay for the tea break which provides a chance to socialise and discuss any questions that come up. You are free to leave or stay on for the second session which begins about 8.30pm. This often consists of a talk and a discussion of an aspect of the teaching of the Buddha - the ethical path, meditation practice and the development of spiritual wisdom. We do not seek to change you - if you practice meditation you will change yourself. Friends may say that you are different, that you have changed for the better. Meditation will provide you with a means to grow and develop, perhaps releasing previously unrealised talents, perhaps even changing your life. So meditation is best practised in contact with a society or Sangha who can offer you the essential support to continue and develop your practice. At the Hertford Buddhist Sangha we have strong links with the Triratna Buddhist Community and especially with the Cambridge Buddhist Centre which offers a full and varied programme for anyone interested in meditation and Buddhism.

Dear friends,

Some of you will have known me as Keith, so I wanted to share a little news. During a beautiful two-week retreat at Padmaloka, I was ordained into the Triratna Buddhist Order by Nandaketu. My new name is Manishura — 'He who is a hero through and for the Three Jewels.' My good friend ( formerly known as Nigel ) was ordained on the same day by Samudraghosha, and is now Utpaladhara, 'He who holds the blue lotus.'

The retreat held around ten days of silence, and it was a real gift to have all that space and to settle so deeply into the meditations. I'm still taking in everything that happened — but it was, without doubt, a deeply positive and energising experience. And it feels like just the right moment to be starting something new together.

Which brings me to our next course. Vision and Transformation begins on Tuesday 18th August — Buddhism for the head and the heart.

Buddhism offers an inspiring vision of what it means to be a human being — and it doesn't stop there. It also gives us practical ways to transform our emotions, and our lives, in the light of that vision. Following on from Radical Dharma – The Technology of Change, and using the same blend of teaching, discussion, meditation and practical exercises, these six weeks will help you learn to meditate, deepen your vision, grow in emotional warmth and positivity, and bring the wisdom of Buddhism into every part of your life.

Everyone is welcome, including complete beginners. It's a drop-in class, so come to as many evenings as you can — it really doesn't matter if you miss some. If you've been away for a while, this is the perfect moment to step back in.

Where & when: Millbridge Rooms, Hertford — Tuesday evenings, 7pm for 7.20pm.

And before all that — this coming Tuesday, 11th August, Mark shares the story of his own spiritual journey in our Meet the Mitras series. Well worth coming along.

Hope to see you soon.

Very warm wishes

Manishura

Sunday evening saw us 'send off' Keith and Nigel, as they prepare for their upcoming ordination retreat at Padmaloka. It was a joyful gathering, full of cake, connection, heartfelt rejoicing and symbolic ritual. May they both go well into this significant next step of joining the order. 💛💙❤️

I hope you're surviving the various heatwaves OK. It's relatively cool at the Millbridge Rooms, so it's a very pleasant place to spend an evening whatever the weather's doing.

Last Tuesday Ruchi led a thought-provoking evening exploring different ways of speaking, and how they affect both ourselves and the people around us. She drew on the five kinds of speech the Buddha praised — truthful, kindly, harmonious, helpful and timely — and it was fascinating to notice how rarely all five line up at once, and what a difference it makes when they do. The week before, Mangala visited and gave wonderfully off-the-cuff responses to a whole range of questions.

Coming up:
7 July — Keith: "My Journey to Ordination"
14 July — Amber and Katey
21 July — Adrian and Srigarbha
28 July — Bodhivandana
4 August — Samudraghosha
11 August — Mark (Meet the Mitras series)
18 August — New six-week course: "Vision and Transformation"

On a personal note, I'm very excited to be heading off on retreat to Padmaloka in Norfolk on 10 July for a couple of weeks — to be ordained. I'll be ordained alongside Nigel from our own Hertford Sangha, my good friend John from the Mid Essex Sangha, and five others. Samudraghosha, Rob and Simon from Hertford will be on the retreat too, as will Nandaketu and many others.

I asked for ordination back in 2012, so it will be quite something to step into this next phase of my spiritual journey — and all the more meaningful to do it in the company of good friends. It's hard to know exactly what to expect, and I'm simply trying to stay open rather than hem myself in with too many preconceptions. I'll tell you all about it when I'm back.

Whatever's going on in your life, you'd be very welcome to join us on a Tuesday evening — especially if it's your first time, or if it's been a while. There's no need to book and nothing to prepare or bring. We always give full meditation instructions, so you can simply turn up, settle in, and enjoy a calm and friendly evening. Newcomers are the beating heart of what we do, and we love meeting them.

Have a wonderful July, and I hope to see you soon.

Very warm wishes,

Keith

A lively evening of reflection and discussion this Tuesday night, as we delved into the theme of Perfect Speech and explored the Buddhas teachings to Cundha to understand better how we are able to communicate in the most ethical way.
