💆‍♂️ Equine Massage: More Than Just Treating Muscles

"My horse is fine, so why would they need massage?"

The reality is that many horses develop areas of tension, stiffness, compensation, and fatigue long before they become obviously sore or lame. Horses are incredibly good at adapting their movement and often continue working while subtly altering how they use their bodies.

As an equine massage therapist, I'm not simply looking for "problem areas." I'm assessing the whole horse, identifying patterns of tension, changes in muscle development, asymmetry, and areas that may be working harder than they should.

Regular massage can help:
✔ Support muscle health and suppleness
✔ Improve comfort and relaxation
✔ Identify changes before they become bigger issues
✔ Support performance and recovery
✔ Complement veterinary and other professional care

Perhaps most importantly, it gives us an opportunity to listen to what the horse's body is telling us.

Every horse is different, and what is normal for one horse may not be normal for another. That's why regular assessment and understanding your horse's individual baseline is so valuable.

When was the last time you really looked at how your horse stands, moves, and feels through their body? 👀🐴

One thing I'm incredibly passionate about is sharing knowledge, helping people develop their understanding of horses, and supporting other businesses with their own growth and development.

What started as simply writing informative social media posts, alongside my appointments, has gradually grown into something much bigger over the last six months. I never really set out with a grand plan, just a desire to make information more accessible and to help people feel more confident in their knowledge.

Since then, that passion has evolved into educational resources and books, and several new ideas, collaborations and projects taking shape behind the scenes alongside Olivia at Wolds. It's been exciting to see just how much appetite there is for practical, accessible learning within the equestrian industry.

The response to the Musculoskeletal Equine Anatomy Book has been incredible, and the feedback has helped shape the next stage of development, too. I'm continuing to work on the equine anatomy model, taking onboard suggestions from owners, students, and professionals. The latest plans include one side displaying the superficial muscles and the other the deeper muscle layers, helping to bring anatomy to life in a practical and visual way.

Alongside this, Olivia and I are busy working on two new books, both designed to make knowledge more accessible and relevant for horse owners, students, therapists, and equestrian professionals.

Looking back, it's quite funny to think that all of this started with a few educational posts, a chat with Olivia and a willingness to share knowledge. Now there are books being shipped around the world, new resources in development, and notebooks full of future ideas waiting for the time to bring them to life.

Thank you to everyone who follows along, reads the posts, asks questions, buys the books, attends the courses, and supports the projects. Your feedback, ideas, and encouragement play a huge part in shaping what comes next.

And yes... there are plenty more ideas still to come. 🐴📚

For many years, the "two wrinkles" rule was used as a quick guide to determine whether a bit was sitting correctly in a horse's mouth. The wrinkles form at the corners of the lips, known as the commissures. However, we now know that relying on wrinkles alone is often flawed.

Every horse's mouth is different. When assessing bit fit, we need to consider a range of factors, including:

• The length of the horse's "smile" and the fleshiness of the lips and commissures
• Tongue size and the position of the genioglossus muscle within the tongue
• The location of the molars and canine teeth
• Palate shape, depth and the grooves within the palate
• Bar width and sensitivity
• The style, thickness, and action of the bit itself

A horse with a long smile may show no wrinkles at all, even when the bit is sitting in the correct position.

This is why bit fitting is about so much more than counting wrinkles. It involves looking inside the mouth, understanding the horse's anatomy, and assessing how the bit interacts with the structures within the oral cavity.

Every horse is an individual, and the correct bit position for one may not be appropriate for another.

So, take a look inside your horse's mouth. Are you confident that your bit is sitting in the right place for your horse?

What is the major issue you can spot in the photo below? 👀

✨ Casper was treated to a brand-new bridle today and is looking very smart as he continues his dressage journey, having recently affiliated to British Dressage.

Finding the right fit is just as important for our smaller equine friends, which is why I stock a range of beautiful pony and Shetland bridles, offering excellent quality, comfort, and adjustability. After all, ponies rarely fit neatly into a standard “pony” size!

Whether you’re looking for a first bridle, an upgrade, or help achieving the best fit for your horse or pony, I can help with a range of individual parts and complete bridles tailored to suit their shape and needs. 🐴💕

Rumour has it… it’s my birthday next week 🎂

And for probably the first time in a very long time, I am actually taking proper time off. TEN whole days. Which, when you’re self employed, feels slightly illegal.

Between equine massages, bit and bridle fittings, book sales, writing new books, designing 3D models, supporting three other businesses with admin, while also working on new collaborations, and generally spinning about 47 plates at once… I think the break is probably overdue 😅

The break starts with a lovely friend’s wedding, then after that I am planning some proper downtime. No rushing around. No endless to do list. No “I’ll just quickly do this one thing.”

Just a bit of breathing space, slower mornings, sunshine, horses, family time, and trying to remember what switching off actually feels like.

Running your own business is something I’m incredibly grateful for, but it also becomes very hard to separate work from life sometimes. The ideas, messages, admin, planning and responsibility never really stop. So this is your reminder too… rest is productive sometimes.

I will still be checking and replying to messages while I’m off, but I may be a little slower than usual… mainly because I am attempting to behave like a normal person for 10 days 😅

I’ll be back from the 15th June and straight into a fully booked week… so apparently “rested and refreshed” may only last about 12 minutes 🤣

For now though, I’m swapping the laptop for sunshine, fresh air, and pretending notifications don’t exist for a little while 🌿
