I often come out in defence of primary care for this very reason…

So I’m going to rant a little about the prevalence of people who slag off the NHS, GPs in particular for ‘fobbing them off’ in appointments.

The patient walks in with real symptoms, uncertainty and fear over what’s happening to their body that they don’t understand. They want an outcome. They want an answer. They want a solution.

What they are often met with is a Doctor who recognises that whilst the issue still needs to be addressed, the root cause of poor lifestyle choices and high stress/anxiety/depression often still remain. So they ask the questions…

And are then met with vitriol…especially on social media…with angry patients complaining that the doctor banged on about their anxiety and didn’t listen to their symptoms…

But they did…and that’s why they want to talk about it…to ALSO find ways to support that so the patient can get the best outcome.

So yeah…often the ‘anxious patient’ is exactly that…and that needs addressing. Often the patient with high cholesterol is necking 5 pints a night. Often the patient with IBS is eating take outs every night. Not always…but the stats don’t lie.

We do have to take some responsibility for the choices we make about how we live our lives before expecting a GP to unfold a lifetime of poor choices and fix a problem that was preventable in a 15 minute appointment.

Of course there will always be complacent and poor GPs…but there are also complacent and poor patients and the patients have more control than the GP over what they do on the other side of the surgery doors.

Pretty proud right now 🥰

We all make mistakes…

Even when we should know better

So here’s my tale of woe from this week where I did not and have not listened to my body…

And then been surprised when it has gone 💥🌋

I’m now on steroids to treat a severe allergic reaction and from the pharmacist to the GP to the A&E doctor the message has been the same..

The body has a tolerance for stress whether it be physical or emotional…there is a finite point at which it can’t keep the basic systems functioning optimally whilst also being under external load…and it will let you know when it needs a break.

I have been aware of the odd thing not feeling ‘quite right’ for a few weeks…heaviness, fatigue, struggling to focus, but because I had a day at the spa, had an easier day at work, took a day off from the gym but walked instead, I just assumed I was managing the load well.

But the stress of the last few months plus the stress of training and the stress of a few other things playing on my mind has meant that I’ve kept using petrol from the tank that was rapidly running out.

Which meant it didn’t take much for my CNS to essentially breakdown.

I needed a severe allergic reaction and fainting in public for me to realise that I fu**ed up and get myself to hospital and take 2 days off work on an already short week.

This is not ideal…

But…another day of looking like s**t, another day of not being able to serve my clients, another day of just plugging on…means I am now actively going against any advice I would give to anyone I work with…

So for now, read my story and just check in with yourself…when was the last time you listened to what your body told you? When did you last check in on how you felt emotionally?

What can you do now to give yourself what you need?

The end…

From the perspective of a Practitioner it doesn’t get better…

Messages like these are the stuff dreams are made of…

And I get to live this dream whilst sharing the journey to others achieving theirs…

“Last week I ran for the first time since March 2 years ago…I was so confident I had confidence and faith in my body…if I do it will only be in the pursuit of joy of movement and freedom.”

Tell me how lucky I am to get to do this every day 💕

And if you want joy and movement and freedom…then let’s go find it together! Message me!

It’s HARD when things go wrong…

When you wake up in pain…

When you get a flare up…

When you overdo it and suffer the consequences…

But not every set back is a catastrophe.

Sometimes they’re opportunities…

To hold space for what you need

To rest, digest and recover

To learn more about yourself

To enter into a new, more positive dialogue with your body about what it’s feeling and why, what it needs and when.

How you choose to frame what you’re feeling is the thing that makes or breaks the experience of it.

So just start by challenging yourself to move around it and see whether there’s a different place to view it that gives you a different perspective.

Learning this, even just becoming aware of this as an option that’s available to you, is what most people miss when they’re managing chronic pain, illness and anxiety.

I have a great little 3 step program that’s perfect…

If you want it, send me a DM now with the word POSITIVE and I’ll send it right over!
