✍️ From a Small Cup to a Great River - We often blame our unhappiness on the people around us or the circumstances life has handed us. We think our suffering comes from outside—from what happened, from what was said, from what we lost. But the truth is both simpler and more profound: we suffer because we haven’t yet found solid ground in our own inner peace.
When our inner world is small and cramped, we are easily shaken by life’s inevitable ups and downs—the worldly conditions that flow through everyone’s days, regardless of who they are or what they’ve accomplished.
Consider a handful of salt. If you stir that salt into a small glass of water, the water becomes too salty, undrinkable. But if you toss that same handful of salt into a vast, flowing river, the water remains fresh and sweet. The salt is exactly the same. What changed is the space it landed in.
This is what mindfulness and loving-kindness do for us: they expand our hearts. Through gentle, patient practice, we stop being a small cup—fragile, easily overwhelmed, turned bitter by every difficulty—and we start becoming a great river—spacious, flowing, able to absorb life’s challenges without losing our essential nature.
When our hearts are wide and our spirits are grounded in peace, the salt of life—the praise and the blame, the gains and the losses, the things that go right and the things that go wrong—can no longer fundamentally change who we are. We can meet it all with more steadiness, more grace, more capacity to remain ourselves even when conditions aren’t favorable.
We’re not trying to avoid the salt. Life will always bring difficulties. But we’re learning to become rivers instead of cups—vast enough to hold whatever comes without becoming bitter, grounded enough to remain peaceful even when circumstances aren’t.
May we all expand our hearts through practice. May we become big rivers, not small cups. May we find the inner peace that cannot be shaken by life’s inevitable changes.
