Excellence in Aromatherapy

The International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists is one of the largest professional aromatherapy practitioner organisations in the world and is a strong, respected voice in the field of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). Its inception in 2002, an amalgamation of the International Society of Professional Aromatherapists and the Register of Qualifi

ed Aromatherapist, was the result of a vision by the UK's major international professional aromatherapy organisations to become the best they could. The IFPA is a registered charity with clear, defined aims and objectives and is supported through its membership in the UK and worldwide. The IFPA believes wholeheartedly in the principles and philosophies of holistic health, health care and the promotion of well-being for the individual. These principles and beliefs are the foundations of the IFPA's aims and objectives for its members together with its strong codes of ethics and practice. About Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is the controlled use of essential oils by different methods to enhance the well-being of the mind, body and spirit. It uses pure essences from plants, which may have a preventative effect, helping to care for common ailments while working alongside medical treatment in the healing process. Essential oils are highly fragrant, volatile and are extracted from flowers, leaves, twigs, bark, roots and fruits of many common plants. The essential oils have many different properties and as research has shown, can be stimulating, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, relaxing, calming, soothing and uplifting. Aromatherapy, therefore, has the ability to affect the emotions, promote bodily well-being and balance psychologically. Aromatherapy is beneficial to most people in most circumstances. Essential oils must be diluted and used with care, preferably under the guidance of a qualified IFPA aromatherapist. When used correctly and by a qualified IFPA aromatherapist, aromatherapy can be effective for a wide client group. Your local aromatherapist will help to advise you on which method and treatment would be best for you.

September has its own particular rhythm.

After the looseness of summer, alarms return, diaries fill up, school begins again and many people suddenly find themselves spending considerably more time indoors. It can be tempting to respond to seasonal change by immediately reaching for something that promises to “support immunity.” But before adding anything, it can be useful to look at what's already happening.

Has sleep changed? Has your workload increased? Are you eating differently? Has there been enough space for recovery?

Aromatherapy can complement these foundations beautifully - perhaps through an evening ritual that protects rest or an aromatic pause that marks the end of the working day.

Seasonal resilience is rarely one thing, it's the relationship between many small things.

Myrrh is an oil that rewards patience.

Its deep, resinous aroma has little in common with the immediate brightness of citrus oils or the freshness of mints. Instead, it unfolds slowly - which perhaps explains why aromatic resins have accompanied contemplative and ceremonial practices for thousands of years.

For practitioners, August offers an opportunity to experience oils such as Myrrh outside the usual question of "What is this for?"
Instead, we can ask: How does this aroma change the pace of the moment?

Sometimes understanding an essential oil begins not with its therapeutic application, but with simply spending time with it.

We speak frequently about creating the right environment for clients, but the practitioner is part of that environment too.

Moving immediately from one appointment into another can leave little opportunity to notice what you're carrying forward - mentally, emotionally or even sensorily.

A short transition doesn't need to become an elaborate self-care ritual, and importantly, aromatherapy doesn't always need to be the answer.

After spending a day surrounded by aroma, sensory neutrality may sometimes be exactly what a practitioner needs. Boundaries aren't separate from compassionate practice, they're one of the things that make compassionate practice sustainable.

There is something distinctly unhurried about Sandalwood.

Its aroma doesn't demand attention in the way a bright citrus or invigorating mint might. It is deeper, slower and more persistent - qualities that have contributed to its relationship with contemplative practices for generations.

For aromatherapists, understanding an oil means looking beyond a list of therapeutic properties. Its history, aromatic character, cultural significance and the way an individual experiences it all contribute to its place within practice.

During a month centred around inner listening, Sandalwood gives us an opportunity to explore exactly that.
🌿 Practitioner note: responsible sourcing is particularly important with Sandalwood. Always consider botanical identification, provenance and sustainability when purchasing.

We often think we're resting because we've stopped working, but our minds may still be receiving a constant stream of information.

True rest can also mean reducing sensory and cognitive input - allowing attention to soften rather than continually asking it to move from one thing to another. This is where aromatherapy can offer something beautifully simple. A single aromatic focus can become an invitation to pause.

Sandalwood brings a slow, meditative quality to this blend, Lavender complements its softer character, while Frankincense provides a resinous depth traditionally associated with contemplation.

Try pairing the blend with something that requires nothing from you: a book, a bath, sitting outside or simply closing your eyes for ten minutes.
Rest doesn't always need a purpose, sometimes the pause is enough.

As aromatherapy continues to evolve, so too does the opportunity to broaden its reach.

Around the world, practitioners are bringing aromatherapy into community centres, women's refuges, refugee support programmes, addiction recovery services and homelessness charities—creating moments of comfort, familiarity and connection in settings where wellbeing can make a meaningful difference.

In these environments, the focus isn't on providing a cure. It's about meeting people where they are, respecting individual experiences, and offering person-centred support through thoughtful, ethical practice.

As a profession, we have an opportunity to continue making aromatherapy more accessible, more inclusive and more widely available—ensuring its benefits can be experienced by communities from all walks of life.

🌿 Because the future of aromatherapy isn't just about where we practise. It's about who we make it possible to reach.

When we think about aromatherapy, it's easy to picture treatment rooms, spas or private practice.

But around the world, practitioners are also volunteering their time and expertise within community settings - supporting people through outreach programmes, charities, women's refuges, homelessness services, addiction recovery initiatives and refugee organisations. In these environments, the role of aromatherapy often looks different.

The focus shifts away from treatments and towards creating moments of comfort, familiarity, dignity and human connection.

Sometimes the greatest impact isn't found in a complex blend, but in offering someone the opportunity to pause, breathe and simply choose the aroma that feels right for them.

As a profession, continuing to explore how aromatherapy can become more accessible is an exciting opportunity for the future.

Whether you're spending one night away or travelling for several weeks, unfamiliar environments can influence how easily we switch off at the end of the day.

Creating a small evening ritual with a familiar aroma can help introduce a sense of consistency wherever you're staying. It isn't about recreating home - it's about creating a moment that feels familiar.

Travelling doesn't mean leaving your aromatherapy practice behind.

With a little planning, essential oils can become practical companions throughout your journey - supporting moments of rest, familiarity and wellbeing without overpacking your suitcase.

From preparing roller blends before you leave to understanding how heat and sunlight can affect your oils, small considerations can make a big difference while travelling.

Sometimes the best travel companion isn't another outfit - it's a thoughtfully packed aromatherapy kit 🌿✈️
