Share your views on Pharmacy First and local pharmacy services

People across Leicester and Leicestershire are still being encouraged to share their experiences of using local pharmacies and the NHS Pharmacy First service by completing the survey launched by Healthwatch Leicester and Leicestershire.

Pharmacy First allows people to access advice and treatment for a range of common conditions directly from a community pharmacy, often without needing to see a GP first.
Through the survey, Healthwatch wants to understand how well the service is working, what could be improved and whether local pharmacies are helping people access care more quickly and conveniently. Feedback from people who have used the service, as well as those who have not, will help local health and care organisations better understand awareness of Pharmacy First, barriers to access and opportunities to improve patient experience.

In addition to the survey, Healthwatch outreach officers will be visiting community pharmacies across Leicester and Leicestershire to speak directly with members of the public and hear first-hand about their experiences of using pharmacy services.
The survey is open until Friday 4 September 2026.

Leicester Children’s Hospital teams unite for summer surgery drive to cut waiting times

More than 150 children received planned operations during a two-week summer surgery initiative at Leicester Children’s Hospital, helping to reduce waiting times and increase capacity ahead of the busy winter period.

Building on the success of previous ‘super weeks’, teams from across University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) came together during the school holidays to carry out as many low-complexity elective operations as possible in a specially designated child-friendly ward environment.

The initiative focused on day-case procedures or short-stay surgery across Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedic, Paediatric Gastroenterology, Paediatric Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Paediatric Plastic Surgery, Paediatric General Surgery and Urology, Paediatric Ophthalmology and Paediatric Maxillofacial. By concentrating activity in a single ward rather than spreading patients across multiple areas, teams were able to maximise efficiency and increase the number of operations completed.

The programme took advantage of a period when emergency pressures are typically lower, allowing more beds and theatre capacity to be dedicated to planned care. It formed part of Leicester Children’s Hospital’s ongoing work to reduce waiting times for children and ensure more patients receive treatment sooner.

Expansion of community mental health support


Today, the Government announced a major expansion of community mental health support across England, which includes facilities in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

People struggling with their mental health will find it easier to get the right help the first time they ask for it, including bringing mental health and specialist teams together under one roof – working alongside GPs, councils, the voluntary sector and families, with direct links into housing and employment support.

Locally, the expansion includes the Hello Help Hub in Loughborough which is a community-based mental health centre currently operating as a pilot, with plans to open a second hub in Leicester city centre over the coming year.

Plans are also progressing for a co-located Mental Health Emergency Department at LRI. Over recent months, partners across the system have been working together to develop the proposal. While the project remains in the early planning stages, it presents an exciting opportunity to improve access to support and provide a more therapeutic environment for people experiencing a mental health crisis.

Alongside these developments, support continues to be available through 25 Neighbourhood Mental Health Cafés. These provide walk-in mental health support with no appointment required for people experiencing urgent mental health needs.

£343m plan will open 159 NHS mental health centres in England, giving people earlier local support and specialist crisis care outside A&E.

ADVANCED NOTICE - WOLVEY DISPENSARY.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Wolvey Dispensary will be closed from Monday 3rd August 2026 to Tuesday 11th August 2026.

It will reopen on Wednesday 12th August 2026 at 8.30am.

Stay Safe and Well During Hot Weather


The possibility of further heatwaves this summer presents increased health risks across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, as well as a heightened risk of wildfires. In line with recurring Heat Health Alerts, residents are being encouraged to take simple precautions to stay safe while enjoying the warmer weather.

People are advised to keep cool by closing blinds and curtains on sun-facing windows, staying well hydrated, using fans safely, and limiting time in direct sunlight, particularly between 11am and 3pm. When outdoors, wear light, loose-fitting clothing, a hat and sunglasses, and apply sunscreen regularly with a minimum SPF 30 and 4- or 5-star UVA protection. Extra care should be taken to ensure children, older people, those with long-term health conditions, and pets stay cool and hydrated.

Residents can also help reduce the risk of wildfires by:

Taking litter home, especially glass bottles
Disposing of ci******es responsibly
Avoiding barbecues and open flames in dry grassland areas
Reporting fires immediately by calling 999
While open water may look inviting during hot weather, swimming in rivers, lakes, reservoirs and other open water locations can be dangerous. Cooling off at a local swimming pool is a much safer option.
