For schools planning adaptations over the summer holidays, now is often when key design and coordination decisions need to be made.

This is particularly true for hygiene rooms in SEND and specialist education environments, where the space needs to support both the needs of the pupil and the practical requirements of the staff using it every day.

Selecting the right equipment is extremely important, but creating a successful hygiene room involves careful consideration and planning of layouts, transfer spaces, structural requirements, plumbing, electrical services, storage, and accessibility. All these elements need to work together as part of the wider design.

The earlier these requirements are addressed, the easier they are to coordinate alongside other project elements and the greater the opportunity to create a space that works well in practice.

The value of specialist BIM input very much depends on when it happens.



Once layouts, services and structural coordination are already progressing, specialist equipment changes become much harder to resolve efficiently.



In accessible and care environments, systems such as ceiling hoists and hygiene equipment can affect transfer clearances, ceiling zones, fixing strategies, equipment reach, access routes, and coordination with surrounding MEP elements. Addressing those requirements early makes coordination significantly easier as the design develops.



At Multicare, our Revit-based BIM support is typically delivered across RIBA Stages 2, 3 and 4.



At Stage 2, this often involves early equipment zoning, transfer spaces, structural considerations, and equipment spatial requirements.



At Stage 3, the focus shifts towards coordinated model development, ensuring specialist equipment interfaces correctly with architectural, structural, and MEP elements as coordination progresses.
