Our Minor Injuries Unit has seen an increase in patients with serious sunburns in recent weeks. With another warm spell hitting the UK, it’s important to remember that UV rays can damage your skin even on cloudy days, increasing your risk of skin cancer. ☀️

Protect yourself by:
- Staying in the shade between 11am and 3pm
- Using SPF 30+ sunscreen (ideally SPF 50) with UVA + UVB protection
- Reapplying sunscreen every two hours, and after swimming or sweating
- Wearing protective clothing, a hat and sunglasses
- Taking extra care with children and babies

If you do get sunburnt, cool the skin with cold water, stay hydrated and use soothing aftersun products such as aloe vera.
And remember: there is no such thing as a ‘healthy’ tan (unless it comes from a bottle!) - it is a sign of skin damage.

Enjoy the sunshine safely this summer! 🕶️

Most people can buy their own treatments for hay fever and allergies.

These medicines are available over the counter at pharmacies or supermarkets without needing a prescription.

Pharmacists can also offer advice and guidance.
