About Katherine:
For as long as I can remember I have wanted to look after babies. I had a nanny job in my gap year & had a place at Great Ormond Street Hospital to train as a Paediatric Nurse before my friends had any idea what they wanted to do! On qualifying, I worked at Great Ormond Street before moving to Paediatric Accident & Emergency at a London hospital where I continue to work. I have been in the NHS nearly 3 decades!I have had various Paediatric Nursing roles, as a Registered Health Visitor in the community & hospital & in 2006, I trained to be a Certified Infant Massage Instructor. I was blown away by the benefits for parents and babies. The classes have been such a special part of my work supporting parents ever since. Back in 2006, while working as a Paediatric Nurse, Health Visitor in London, I recognised the need for a relaxed and friendly service to address common parental concerns & Baby Steps was born. Offering courses in Baby & Child First Aid, Weaning, Baby Massage & Relaxation. My mission remains the same 'To give reassurance and confidence to a parent and baby everyday'. I feel I have the best job in the world.

I am Mummy to Isabella and William, which makes everyday magic....and full on! Being a parent has exceeded all I could have wished for but it is also harder than I could have imagined!! I’ve been there……

After running Baby Steps in London for 13 years, we moved to Hampshire. Here I have a beautiful studio in the woods which offers a calm cocoon for new parents and babies. And now with online too, I can help even more families. I can not wait to support you and your little one,

Finger food reality check

Social media can make it look like every baby is happily picking up perfect little pieces of food, chewing away and eating a full meal……

But that’s not the whole picture.

Babies develop their feeding skills gradually and they don’t all get there at the same time.

🥕 In the early stages, babies use a palmar grasp - using their whole hand to pick food up.

👆 Around 9–10 months, the pincer grip (thumb and index finger) starts to develop, giving them much more precise control.

And around this stage, you’re much more likely to see babies:
licking
sucking
chewing
squishing
dropping
throwing
…and occasionally actually eating! 😂

That’s NORMAL.

It’s also one of the reasons I’m such a fan of offering appropriately prepared family food rather than feeling you need to create elaborate “baby meals”.

They can watch you eat. They can explore the same foods. And you haven’t spent an hour making something they immediately squish into the table. 🙈

Because when we put pressure on ourselves to recreate what we see online, it can raise our stress levels and babies absolutely pick up on that.

So please…

Don’t compare your baby to someone else’s baby online.

Don’t assume a 10-second reel shows the whole picture.

And remember: feeding is a developmental journey, not a performance.

Your baby doesn’t need to eat like an Instagram baby. They just need time, opportunity, appropriate foods and you beside them.

I still have places on my Weaning without Worry Workshop on Monday 1.30-4pm covering First Aid for Weaning & step by step Weaning advice. Babies welcome. Or why not arrange one with friends/ family at home or at the Studio. Link in bio for my online First Aid for Weaning course.

Did you read that again and think… WOW. That explains a lot.

Maybe you don’t need to “get your s**t together.”

In Week 1 of Soul-Full Mama, we start to explore matrescence - the phenomenal transition that happens when we become a mother.

And one of the things we talk about is the massive shift that happens in the brain.

Something most mums simply aren’t told about.

Why aren’t we told this?!

Because when you understand what is actually happening to you, it becomes so much easier to be kind to yourself.

Maybe you’re not getting it wrong.
Maybe you haven’t lost your identity.
Maybe you’re navigating one of the biggest transformations of your life. 🤍

Soul-Full Mama starts Monday 14th September for 5 very special Mondays - your own little bubble of support, connection and calm.

✨ Relaxation for you & your baby
✨ Supportive discussion to create your own toolkit for navigating the highs & lows of motherhood
✨ Cuppas & wellness treats
✨ A WhatsApp support group between sessions
✨ A lovely pub lunch together in the final week
✨ All in the cosy cocoon of the Baby Steps Studio in the woods 🌿

And I would LOVE you to join us, whatever stage of motherhood you’re at.

Come as you are. Bring your messy, brilliant, exhausting, beautiful motherhood with you.

You’ll feel like it’s your second home. 🤍

I can’t wait

The “Weaning gap” is REAL - and I don’t think we talk about it enough. 🤍

That stage where your baby suddenly isn’t interested in being spoon-fed… but they’re not quite developmentally ready for lots of finger foods either.

Cue the panic.
Cue Instagram comparisons.
Cue wondering if everyone else’s baby is somehow miles ahead.

The reality is that babies develop at different rates, and social media can give us a very distorted picture of what “normal” weaning looks like.

Around 9–10 months, babies are generally developmentally and physiologically much better equipped to manage a wider range of finger foods — but that doesn’t mean every baby will suddenly be happily eating three meals of finger food!

There is so much in-between.

You don’t need to compare your baby’s plate with another baby’s plate.

If you’re stuck in this stage, feeling unsure what to offer, or just want someone to look at YOUR baby and YOUR situation, I offer 1:1 Weaning Without Worry support.

My next Weaning Without Worry workshop is:
📅 Monday 14th September
⏰ 1.30–4pm
📍 Baby Steps Studio
👶 Babies very welcome

You can also arrange a private session for friends/family - either in your own home or at the Studio.

You really don’t have to figure it all out from Instagram. 🤍

Send me a message if you’d like some support.

26 years ago, I started working in Paediatric A&E… and I’m still there. 🤍

I found my old ID badge in a Bank Holiday clear-out and it stopped me in my tracks.

26 years of caring for poorly and injured children. 26 years of supporting parents through some of their scariest moments. And over 20 years of Baby Steps, helping parents feel calmer and more confident when it comes to their babies and children. It mean the world to me.

That experience is at the heart of my Baby & Child First Aid courses - practical, reassuring and taught by someone who has spent decades caring for children in real-life emergencies.

Because knowing what to do can make such a difference to how you feel when something happens.

So, if First Aid is on your autumn to-do list, why not make it something you do together?
