The gut microbiome is a complex ecosystem of microorganisms that plays a crucial role in your health.

We have more bacterial cells inside us than human cells so, of course, they influence every major organ system in the body.

🥦 Fibre
🧀 Fermented foods
🚴‍♀️ Physical Activity
😴 Sleep

These all improve your microbiome.
Which ONE will you focus on in the next week?

Let's talk Breakfast...

Do you:

- Prioritise breakfast?
- Eat it on the go?
- Skip it altogether?

And how is that working for you?

Some people swear by fasting until lunchtime, some people wake up ravenous and eat almost immediately, some people can take it or leave it.

But if you are forgetful, have a 3pm energy crash, are not sleeping well or have sugar cravings after dinner, you should reconsider your morning meal.

It is important to really think about your breakfast - what, how and when you eat your first meal of the day will determine how your entire day unfolds.

For my 20 page recipe book dedicated to breakfast, comment BREAKFAST and I'll send your copy right over to you.

Your lifestyle directly shapes your gut microbiome and gut barrier.

- Ultra-processed diets: High sugar and artificial additives feed harmful bacteria

- Low fibre intake: Starves beneficial microbes

- Chronic stress: Activates the fight-or-flight response, slowing digestion and increasing gut permeability

- Lack of sleep: Disrupts the circadian rhythms of gut microbes, altering their population balance

- Physical inactivity: Slows down motility, leading to constipation and bacterial overgrowth

- Frequent medication use: Antibiotics and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) damage the stomach and intestinal lining

- Alcohol and smoking: lead to inflammation and weakened gut barrier

Dysbiosis (gut microbe imbalance) causes body-wide issues. To help pinpoint what might be affecting your digestive system book your free Gut Confidence Call (link in bio)

Now think of what happens when the hydrochloric acid from your stomach moves up into your oesophagus.

This movement of acid is known as acid reflux and it's really important that it is stopped to protect your oesophagus from corrosion.

If someone you know experiences heartburn - a burning sensation in the chest - please share this with them so they can take action and protect themselves from oesophageal damage.

Unless you have digestive problems, you probably don’t give your gut bacteria a second’s thought - but you should.

Your microbiome is the busy metropolis of microorganisms that call your body home.

It's made up of trillions of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microscopic critters that live in various parts of your body, from your gut to your skin and everything in between.

Your gut microbes affect your hunger levels, hormones, sleep, immunity, skin and mood.

Keep yours healthy with insoluble fibre from fruit, veg, beans, lentils and oats, and fermented foods like yoghurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso and some cheeses.

As with everything nutrition-wise, there's more to it! And what is best for you might not be best for your neighbour.

Fun Fact Friday...

I think we all know by now that tomatoes are actually a fruit and not a vegetable. But did you know that lycopene found in tomato skins is much better absorbed when tomatoes are cooked tan when eaten raw?

What is lycopene?
Lycopene is a potent antioxidant which neutralises unstable molecules in the body (free radicals) which reduces damage to DNA in cells thereby reducing mutations to cells which can lead to chronic diseases like cancer.

Cooking tomatoes boosts the levels of lycopene availability which means we absorb more of this powerful carotenoid.

Raw tomatoes are also great for us, and in fact retain more vitamin C, as some is lost through cooking.

So raw, or cooked - eat your tomatoes! I like popping some in a poacher with my eggs to maximise the lycopene content.

NB. If you are intolerant to tomatoes - cooked or raw - i.e. they cause you acid reflux or other digestive symptoms, it could be an issue with your lower oesophageal sphincter, and I can help. Book a free call to find out how (link in bio) 🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅
