“Preventing Athlete’s Foot During the Summer”
Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection that thrives in warm, moist environments. During the summer months, taking a few simple precautions can significantly reduce your risk of infection.
Foot care recommendations:
* Wash your feet daily using soap and water, paying particular attention to the areas between the toes.
* Dry your feet thoroughly after washing, bathing, swimming, or exercise. Fungi grows best in damp conditions.
* Change socks daily, or more often if your feet become sweaty. Choose moisture-wicking or breathable materials where possible.
* Wear well-fitting, breathable footwear and avoid keeping feet enclosed in hot, sweaty shoes for long periods.
* Rotate shoes regularly to allow them to dry completely between wears.
* Wear flip-flops or protective footwear in communal areas such as swimming pools, gym changing rooms, and public showers.
* Avoid sharing towels, socks, footwear, or nail care instruments.
* Consider using an anti fungal foot cream or spray if you are prone to excessive sweating or recurrent fungal infections.
* Check your feet regularly for signs of infection, including itching, redness, scaling, peeling skin, or cracking between the toes.
Seek professional advice if:
* Symptoms persist or recur despite self-care measures.
* The infection spreads to the toenails.
* You have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system and notice any changes to your feet.
