Are you a therapist or helper in burnout, needing to rebuild your resilience or lacking self-compassion??

Hello!

I am a newly qualified Supervisor.

As a therapist I integrate Person Centred Therapy with working with the body via Focusing Oriented Therapy, body psychotherapy, Trauma Focused Therapy and Compassion Focused Therapy.

So as a supervisor I have a particular interest in working with those who are interested in supervision that includes working with their felt sense and body based processes as part of exploring how they approach their client work.

I integrate the 7 eyed model with Focusing Oriented Supervision, IDM and Interpersonal Recall.

I am particularly interested in working with those who may be experiencing burnout and who are interested in rebuilding their inner resources, resilience and self-compassion.

My rate is £80 per 1.5 hour for qualified therapists. £55 for trainees. Via Zoom or face to face on Anglesey.

What is a therapist actually for?

Sometimes a client will tell me something important and then immediately argue against themselves.

I might find myself saying, “Can we stay with the thing you said just before that?”

Because sometimes that small, tentative thing is where the life is.

I’ve been thinking about what I actually believe my job is as a therapist.

I don’t believe it’s to know somebody else’s life better than they do.

Sometimes I think I’m a shepherd. Sometimes I also think, rather less poetically, that I’m a plumber! But a large part of my work is helping people become able to hear themselves — perhaps after many years of learning not to.

People sometimes come to therapy hoping that the therapist will know what to do. I understand that.When we are lost, frightened, stuck or overwhelmed, there is something very appealing about finding somebody who understands the territory and asking them to show us the way out.And therapists do know....

Legislate to make ‘Counsellor’ and ‘Psychotherapist’ protected titles regulated by the HCPC. The Government should also review how this could include influencers and life coaches offering mental health services, ensuring all are subject to mandatory fitness-to-practise oversight.

This is a good step but it still sees uncomfortable feelings as being a problem to be got rid of.

But a trigger is something from our inner world. It’s something from our own past that needed a wise grounded adult to help us feel it because back then we were too little to hold it alone.

When a child vows never to feel that feeling a manager part is born. If the child was three years old the manager is three too.

And these managers are still trying to manage our lives by stopping uncomfortable feelings from being felt.

It doesn’t realise we are an adult now. It doesn’t realise we can safely feel the feeling.

The child part does have a wise grounded adult available to it now - ourselves!

When we can finally keep our fears and anxiety and sadness company they get to unburden, to heal.

Once we learn to accompany the child parts, our triggers then become doorways to actually healing.

The managers finally get to rest because they don’t have to constantly work to keep unwanted feelings down.

They learn to get curious. They learn that they aren’t stuck in the past.

And we can finally get to meet ourselves in the present moment.
