The recent hot dry spell will have lowered worm pressure on most farms, but as soon as we get moisture, we’re likely to see a surge in worm challenge so it’s a good idea to keep a close eye on lamb performance.

As worm challenge builds into the mid-to-late season, using Zolvix™, a group 4 wormer, can help remove worms, including those that that may have survived earlier treatments.

This can help lambs make the most of the grass and maintain good growth 📈

A couple of weeks after rain is usually a good time to FEC test and can help build a clearer picture of worm burden and guide treatment timing.

Thanks Will for sharing your quarantine strategy.

Quarantine involves separating the new group and clearing out any leftover worms with a group 4 wormer, like Zolvix, which makes sure new worms aren't brought onto the farm and the pastures are also not infected.

Weighing lambs and taking regular faecal egg counts (FEC) are both useful tools when it comes to monitoring worm burdens and can help you decide if treatment is needed.

National Sheep Association what a day!

Talked about worms and BCS alllllll day 🥰🐑 I’d have to say the main query on the SCOPS stand was about Haemonchus!

Only downside was it was a bit warm for the Welsh in me!!!

Pleased that Weston Farm is enjoying the BCS work - either that or he’s saying it to get rid of me!!!

While Haemonchus is becoming more prevalent across the UK, a high FEC in ewes doesn’t automatically mean Haemonchus is responsible, so testing is key.

High mob egg counts may be driven by just a few animals, or by other strongyles rather than Haemonchus.

Where Haemonchus is suspected, lab staining, AI egg identification and FAMACHA testing can help guide decisions and ideally any treatment should be targeted.

It’s definitely worth a chat with your vet and SQP if you think Haemonchus may be an issue.
