Let's talk about Corns...

Corns are localised areas of thickened skin that develop in response to pressure or friction.

Corns can be either hard or soft, with hard corns more commonly found on the plantar surface or the top of toes.

Plantar corns form as part of the skin’s natural defense mechanism against excessive mechanical stress. The epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, responds to repeated pressure by producing an excess of keratin (hyperkeratosis), which results in the characteristic hardened area of skin known as a corn.

For individuals struggling with recurrent plantar corns, consulting a Foot Health Practitioner or Podiatrist is essential for proper diagnosis, treatment, and management.

Making sure your shoes fit properly is very important.

Let's talk about Splinter Hemorrhages on fingernails and toenails.

It is small areas of bleeding (hemorrhaging) under the nail.

Looks like thin, red or reddish-brown lines below your nails. They run vertically in the direction of your nail growth. Splinter hemorrhages get their name because they look like wood splinters under your nail.

The leaking blood becomes visible through your nail. The most common cause of the condition is trauma to your nail, but underlying health conditions can cause the disorder as well.

If you have a splinter hemorrhage due to trauma or an injury, it will go away on its own and not cause any concern.

You can get a fungal nail infection if your feet are constantly warm and damp.

You're more likely to get an infection if you wear trainers for a long time and have hot, sweaty feet.

There are some things you can do to help prevent fungal nail infections.

- treat athlete's foot as soon as possible to avoid it spreading to nails

- keep your nails short

- keep your feet clean and dry

- wear clean socks every day

- wear flip-flops in showers at the gym or pool

- wear shoes that fit well and do not have high heels or narrow toes

- throw out old shoes
