My most asked question (after, does it hurt - no - and does it work - yes) is how many treatments will I need.

It’s different for different people HOWEVER if I’m seeing you for fertility, which is about 80% of my patient base, ideally I’d see you every week for 12 weeks. This is because it take 90-120 days for your follicles to develop from a dormant state to an antral state for a dominant follicle to the be ovulated. This gives us the full 12 weeks to target the health of that little egg that will be released in 3 months time.

Acupuncture may seem ‘woo woo’ or ‘alternative’ but it’s not. It’s science. A cool science but it’s science.

You put on a brave smile through every pregnancy announcement, you go to the baby showers, you hold the babies. All while harbouring a broken heart and hidden fears.

You come in because you’ve tried everything else, or because someone mentioned acupuncture might help (it really can btw).

Which it really can. But what can also help is having someone to talk to without judgement. Someone who can make suggestions in terms of lifestyle habits, further testing or things you may not have considered.

Or just having somewhere to be and not have to pretend it’s all okay for an hour.

I can offer all of that ✨

So if you’ve been on this road longer than you expected, my door is open for you 💗

Acupuncture with me, isn’t just about helping you to get pregnant.

It’s also:

- helping you to piece together why it’s taken longer than you had first hoped
- signposting you to and recommending specialist consultants
- recommending appropriate testing where necessary
- a second opinion on any tests you and your partner have already had
- recommendations on IVF clinics
- being someone to talk to about how you feel
- somewhere to relax, be looked after and hopefully leave feeling a little bit better 🫶🏼

Your luteal phase is usually when I start to change treatment to place focus on progesterone, which is viewed as Yang (the counterbalance to Yin) in Chinese Medicine. But Yang is hot in nature (think how you look for a temp rise from progesterone when tracking BBT), and we’re going through a heatwave. And so my patients are feeling more hot. This is where without a bit of extra thought and consideration, encouraging more heat may throw things off balance.

This is why Chinese Medicine is so interesting and so nuanced. We say we treat the individual, the person as a whole, based on factors including their environment, where they are in their cycle and how they’re feeling and present on the day - and this demonstrates exactly why.

So this week in clinic, if you’re in your luteal phase I will likely still work on your Yang, but I’ll be doing more carefully.

All blankets have been stashed away for a rainy day. No one will be getting any moxa. And you couldn’t pay me to turn on the heat lamp ☀️🫠

If you’ve been told ‘just keep trying’ or ‘just try to relax’, this one’s for you.

I’m Maddy, I’m a female-health acupuncturist and I specialise in fertility. My clinic Yin Space is in Horley Surrey and it’s from here that I’m fortunate to get to spend my days helping women navigate the ups and downs of trying for a baby.

For some patients it’s an easy road, but for others it can take more time, which is where I come in.

For many women, their fertility path / journey (or whatever you want to call it!) has meant years of heartbreak, dismissed fears and intensive treatment, and lots don’t know where to turn next. My extensive training has allowed me to build an integrative model of care, where I combine the principles of Chinese Medicine with biomedical knowledge across the landscape of women’s health.

I help patients with deciphering blood work, referrals for further testing, recommendations to consultants when and where appropriate, while giving them a safe, caring environment to share how they really feel.

If any of this sounds like you, my DMs are always open to chat more 🤍

When we look past the wellness industry noise and focus purely on peer-reviewed data, the physiological benefits of acupuncture for fertility are evident, and if I were trying to conceive, it’s one of the first things I’d start.

Not only because I had it regularly when I was ttc and have seen it benefit countless couples, but because the research is there to show its benefits.

It improves IVF outcomes, frozen embryo transfer (FET) outcomes, regulates stress marker to keep your nervous system steady prior to FET and optimises s***m quality.

It isn’t a placebo, it’s not “woo-woo” or the latest trend, it’s an evidence-based clinical strategy that’s grounded in reproductive science. One that I could talk about all day long, because it’s so clever and interesting and wow I feel so lucky to be qualified to practise 🤍

Ollie is my dog that came to me by chance one rainy Monday afternoon. Like me, he has a larger than average nose, is always hungry and can be a bit too emotionally sensitive

I think he’s more like a cat because he listens to his sense and intuition over anything else. And he’s taught me to do the same.

Understanding point function and anatomical theory and how to decipher blood tests and what effect inflammation and autoimmunity has on fertility can only get you so far in this acupuncture life ✨

You also have to follow your gut, which is a good lesson for us all, acupuncturists and patients alike. If you’re not sure about what someone - be it practitioner, doctor, consultant or anyone for that matter is telling you, trust your body and your intuition and follow it 🤍
