Pathway provides person-centred services to people with a learning disability and associated complex behavioural and health needs, supported by our highly trained specialist staff teams. Our services support young people to transition seamlessly from our small and homely Ofsted registered children's residential care homes to our adult CQC registered residential and supported living settings, ensuring people are able to access the right support at the right time.

🎳 Good Times at the Bowling Alley

After a few weeks away for the school holidays, it was brilliant to see our tenants back at the lanes this week.

There was plenty of concentration on the approach, a few cheeky nudges of the ball down the ramp, and lots of cheering along the way. 🎳🙌

But it's about more than the game. It's the familiar routine, the conversations, the independence of choosing a ball and having a go, and being part of something together.

Whether it's a strike or a gutter ball, there's always something to celebrate. 💙

We believe everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy a life full of fun, connection and meaningful activities, doing the things they enjoy, trying new experiences and being part of their community.

🐾 Blu's back at it.

She's become a familiar face around one of our homes these days, trotting in with her tail wagging, always ready for a quick check-in on everyone. This time she was caught mid-inspection of something very important, apparently.

There's actually something to that instinct to reach out and stroke her fur. Interacting with a dog has been shown to help calm the nervous system, easing tension and lowering stress in the moment. For the people we support, a few minutes with Blu isn't just a nice distraction, it's a small physical reset.

We're lucky to have her on the team. 💛

📚 He doesn't just read books, he hunts for them.

Give him a shop full of shelves and he'll come out having spotted three more he wants, usually before he's even reached the till. Ask him about the trip afterwards and you'd better have ten minutes free, he'll happily walk you through the plot, the twist and whether the ending was worth it.

Books and magazines are just one of his interests. He also has a genuine love of wrestling, boxing, music and film, and a strong sense of what he does and doesn't want to do with his day. He's supported to make his own choices, from what he picks up in a charity shop to how he spends his time, with staff there to guide and reassure rather than decide for him.

That thumbs-up in the photo isn't just for the camera. It's how he lets people know he's doing okay, a small, genuine bit of how he communicates.

Good care isn't about keeping someone occupied. It's about knowing who they are, what genuinely interests them, and creating the space for them to keep being themselves, on their own terms.

🎂 He thought it was just another evening back home. He was wrong.

One of our tenants spent the day before his birthday with family, marking the occasion together. But back home, his friends and staff had something else planned: cake, laughter and a celebration that caught him completely by surprise.

Two celebrations, one very happy birthday.

This is what everyday life here is really about: friendship, care and people who go the extra mile. Happy birthday! 🎉

What separates good care from great care? Sometimes it's one sentence.

We recently welcomed a C4Q Inspector for a mock inspection at one of our services, and one line from their feedback stayed with us:

"People are clearly at the heart of their own care and lives."

It's easy to say. It's much harder to build. It takes teams like Nic and Rue's, who show up consistently, listen properly, and give people real ownership over their own lives.

This is the first in a short series looking at what that inspection uncovered: the wins, the learning, and everything in between.

Today, on International Literacy Day, we're highlighting the importance of making literacy meaningful and accessible, connecting reading and communication to the things people enjoy and experience in everyday life.

In care, literacy can mean something much broader. For many of the people Pathway Healthcare supports, living with learning disabilities, complex needs and communication challenges, understanding information, expressing choices and being heard can be part of everyday life.

Our teams find different ways to make communication accessible, through words, pictures, signing, easy-read information and, most importantly, by understanding how each person communicates best.

A hospital passport can ensure essential information travels with someone when they need healthcare. Feedback can be shared verbally, in writing, through pictures or signing. Information about rights, choices and speaking up is made accessible in ways that work for the individual. These may seem like small things, but they can make a big difference to independence, confidence, dignity and choice.

At Pathway, literacy is not simply about being able to read. It is about understanding, communicating, making choices and having a voice.

We believe everyone deserves to understand, be understood and have the opportunity to live a fulfilling life on their own terms. 💙
