Sometimes our internal voices become far louder than the world around us.

You may be reading while replaying a conversation from earlier, listening to someone speak while anticipating what to say next or just sitting in silence while the mind continues moving.

Research into the brain’s “default mode network”, explored by Marcus Raichle and others, suggests that the mind remains highly active even when there is nothing immediate demanding attention externally. This network is associated with reflection, memory, self-referential thinking, and imagining the future.

In other words, the mind is often still in conversation with itself.

At times, this internal activity can become more absorbing than the present moment itself.

Sometimes simply noticing this happening can begin to change the experience of it.
