That's the finding from the National Literacy Trust's 2025 report, and it lines up with what we hear from parents. Children want to share their ideas. They just don't always feel ready to say them out loud.

The jump to secondary school feels bigger than it looks on paper.

New classrooms. New teachers. New friendship groups. And suddenly your child is expected to speak up, ask for help, and hold their own in a room full of unfamiliar faces.

If your child has gone quiet at the thought of it, you're not alone. We hear from parents every week who notice their once-chatty 10 or 11-year-old shrinking back as September gets closer. It's a normal response to a big change.

The first few weeks of a school year ask a lot of children socially. Answering a register. Being called on by a teacher they don't know yet. Speaking up in a group where friendships are still forming. For many children, staying quiet feels safer than getting it wrong.

You can help with the maths paper. You can test spellings at the kitchen table. But when it comes to the 11+ interview, a lot of parents tell us the same thing. "I don't actually know how to prepare them for that bit."

It makes complete sense. Your child spends hours on practice papers, but the speaking side is harder to see and harder to coach at home.

That is the part we love working on. In our sessions, children learn how to answer a question they were not expecting, without freezing or rushing. They practise talking about the things they genuinely enjoy, a book, a sport, a strange fact they read once, in a way that sounds like them rather than something rehearsed. And they build little tricks for staying calm when the nerves start creeping in.

The 13+ interview room can feel enormous to a bright, capable child who has never had to talk about themselves for 20 minutes straight.

We see it all the time. Children who chat happily at home suddenly freeze when a teacher asks, "So, tell me about yourself." Or they know their opinion on a debate topic, but struggle to defend it when someone pushes back.

That gap between knowing and saying is exactly what our summer workshops close.

Over three days, we help young communicators find their voice through public speaking, debating, and interview practice. Small group. Expert coaches. A warm, encouraging space where every child gets to try, stumble, and grow.

Summer holidays are here, and so are our Speak Smart workshops. 🌞

This summer you can find us running workshops across four locations:
- Northwood
- Ealing
- Kensington
- Russell Square

Sessions run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9:00am to 3:00pm, with multiple weeks available at each location. That gives you plenty of options to find a week that suits your family.
