JOINT REPLACEMENT SUPPORT GROUP.
Wednesday 27th May 2026.
Howden Town Council Meeting Room.
April was the first support group meeting, there is another on Wednesday the 27th May at 5pm; it is aimed at people who are recovering from joint replacement surgery, or those about to have surgery. Both groups of patients often have anxiety, possibly questions that can be helped by asking others who are sharing similar experiences, or possibly asking questions of Rob Jones the Chartered Physiotherapist who hosts the meeting. It is held Free of charge at the Howden Town Council meeting room, 17 Bridgegate Howden. DN14 7AE.
Come along and have a cup of tea or coffee, share your experiences, it is proven to be therapuetic.

JOINT REPLACEMENT SUPPORT GROUP?
Most Physiotherapists that I have met will read things that they are curious about in their work; the research that answers the question. I was seeking out ways of optimising the result people get from joint replacement, over and above direct Physiotherapeutic treatment.

I was looking for evidence to support the value of "Prehab" (exercising before the surgery). The surprise finding is that while prehab exercise does help, it becomes a greater benefit when support, (psychological and emotional) is added in the shape of a support group. This is neither something I do (except on a one-to-one basis), nor something I see elsewhere.

So I thought "Step up to the plate" Let’s start a joint replacement support group.

This post is just looking for feedback on the idea. It would need to evolve, but I am thinking possibly a monthly meeting, possibly a talk, or even a guest speaker. All welcome, relatives, friends of individuals, and obviously those that are yet to have surgery.

Please message me, or email [email protected] or text me on 07955568507 if you think you might want to be involved.
The venue is likely to be in Howden East Yorks, and I plan to keep it free of charge if I can.

Bend your knees and keep your back straight is a Mantra that we are all familiar with. But the truth is that 1. Lifting in this way is not shown to reduce the incidence of low back pain, 2. Allowing spinal flexion during lifting does not increase the incidence of low back pain.
So, what we thought helped doesn’t!
What we thought increased the incidence doesn’t!
So where does that leave us? Well studies suggest we can generate more force, we are more efficient, we require less fitness when we bend our backs with our legs; that makes sense. But more importantly if you have back pain then it will not improve if we simply protect it, if we want to mend it, we have no option but to bend it.
Another factor that influences back pain is our belief; fear avoidance increases low back pain.
So, the evidence suggests that lifting technique does not influence back pain, fearing injury during lifting does, and once you have back pain, rendering bending painful, the only way to mend it is to bend it! (A back bends in many ways)
So, bend your knees and keep your back straight lifting technique is not what its cracked up to be, and once we have back pain we have to bend it to mend it, (with graded exposure).
The opposite of the Mantra!

If you need help negotiating a graded exposure of bending in order to mend then please contact me at [email protected] or 07955568507
