Love running or walking around Castle Hill or the Marsden Moors, but absolutely dread the downhills? 🏃‍♂️⛰️

If your knees start screaming the second the path points downward, you aren't alone. "Downhill knee pain" is one of the most common complaints I see here in Huddersfield.

Most people think it’s just "bad knees," but it’s usually just a sign that your quads and hips are struggling to act as brakes against gravity.

The Bulgarian Split squat is a great exercise to help bullet proof year knees! It requires minimal equipment and can be done in the comfort of your own home. I often suggest doing whilst you're brushing your teeth, morning and night, 15 reps on each leg!

Don't let it ruin your summer mileage. Drop me a direct message right here on this page, tell me what's going on, and let's chat about how we can get you sorted.

🏃‍♂️ Do Your Running Injuries Keep Coming Back?

One of the most common things we hear from runners is:

“My knee pain settles… but then returns again when I increase my mileage.”

Recurring running injuries are often linked to more than just the painful area itself. Factors such as running mechanics, strength, control, training load and movement patterns can all play a role.

At Huddersfield Physiotherapy and Running Clinic, our Running Gait Analysis service is designed to help runners better understand:
✔ Why injuries may keep recurring
✔ How you move and load through your running stride
✔ Potential contributing factors to knee pain and overuse injuries
✔ What changes may help improve running efficiency and reduce irritation

The assessment includes:
🏃 Treadmill video analysis
💪 Strength and movement assessment
📋 Individual advice and rehab guidance
🎯 Tailored recommendations specific to your running goals

Whether you’re training for your next race or simply wanting to run comfortably again, we’d be happy to help.

🏃‍♂️ Even Physios Get Injured Sometimes…

Over the last few weeks I’ve unfortunately been dealing with my own knee injury involving the patella tendon — and frustratingly it has meant taking a break from running for the first time in quite a few years.

Ironically, the injury wasn’t actually caused by running… it was caused playing football. Clearly I’m getting a bit too old for those types of sports now! ⚽😅

As both a physio and a runner though, it has definitely given me a fresh perspective on what injured runners go through.

One of the biggest lessons has been the importance of listening to your body. As frustrating as it has been, continuing to run was repeatedly flaring the symptoms up, so the right decision was to temporarily offload the running and allow things to settle.

That doesn’t mean doing nothing though.

My rehab has included:
🚴 Cross training on the bike and elliptical
🏋️ Strength work focused on the patella tendon
💪 Improving overall lower limb strength and control
📈 Gradually reintroducing running as symptoms allow

Thankfully things are moving in the right direction and this morning I managed my first 10-minute run with minimal irritation — so hopefully we’re heading back the right way!

Injuries can be frustrating, especially when running is a big part of your routine, stress relief or fitness. But with the right management, patience and gradual rehab, most runners can get back doing what they enjoy.

If you’re currently struggling with a running injury and not sure how to manage it, feel free to get in touch.

So yesterday I completed the Leeds Half Marathon 1:39:10 🏃‍♂️

A result I’m really pleased with, especially considering the training build-up was a little different this time around. Running mileage has been relatively modest over the last 6–7 weeks, very rarely getting above 20 miles per week, but I’ve consistently included two strength sessions in the gym each week alongside the running.

It’s another reminder that training doesn’t always have to mean huge mileage. A sensible balance of running load, strength work, recovery and consistency can still produce good performances.

As for the event itself, I thought the Leeds Half Marathon was superbly organised from start to finish. The crowd support around the course was absolutely incredible — possibly the best I’ve experienced in terms of both atmosphere and numbers.

A couple of standout spectator signs included:
😂 “Don’t be sh*t”
😂 “Don’t trust that fart”

Brilliant encouragement at exactly the right moments!

Yes, the course is a little hilly, but certainly nothing too extreme, and overall it’s just a fantastic race experience. I’d highly recommend it to anybody considering stepping up to a half marathon.

🏃‍♂️ Málaga Half Marathon – Done! 🇪🇸

Race day is behind me, and I crossed the line in 1:38:12.

On the plus side, that’s a 2-minute improvement on last year, so progress is definitely there. That said, it wasn’t quite the sub-1:35 I was hoping for. I struggled to hold the required pace through the second half, lost some time, and only started to feel a bit more like myself again over the final couple of miles.

I’ll be honest — I felt a little disappointed afterwards. But perspective helps… and so do tapas and a few well-earned beers, which more than made up for it 🍻🍤😄.

All things considered, it’s another solid step forward, lessons learned, and motivation firmly intact. I’m already looking ahead to the next half marathon challenge, where hopefully I can shave off a bit more time and keep pushing the boundaries.

Thanks to everyone who followed along, encouraged me, and kept me accountable along the way 🙌
