**WHAT ACTUALLY IS TRAUMA?**

When we hear the word trauma, we often think of something catastrophic.

Abuse. Violence. A serious accident. Bereavement.

And yes, these experiences can be traumatic.

But trauma can also be much quieter than that.

A simple way I often describe trauma is:

**Too much, too soon - or too little, for too long.**

“Too much, too soon” might be an experience that overwhelmed your ability to cope at the time.

An accident. A frightening medical procedure. Bullying. Sudden loss. An explosive or unpredictable parent.

But then there's **“too little, for too long.”**

Too little emotional connection. Comfort. Reassurance. Safety. Validation.

Perhaps you were told, “Stop crying.”

Maybe nobody asked how you felt.

Perhaps you learned that being good, quiet or helpful kept everybody happy.

Maybe your physical needs were met, but emotionally you often felt alone.

There doesn't always need to be one big event you can point to and say, **“THAT was my trauma.”**

Sometimes it's the accumulation of experiences your nervous system had to adapt to.

And two people can experience the same event very differently. Trauma isn't simply about what happened - it's also about how overwhelming it was for *you* and the support you had around you.

So instead of asking:

**“Was what happened to me bad enough to count as trauma?”**

Try asking:

**“What did my nervous system have to learn in order to cope?”**

The people pleasing. Hyper-independence. Anxiety. Perfectionism. Need for control. Shutting down.

These may not be personality flaws.

**They may be adaptations.**

And understanding why they developed can be the beginning of working *with* yourself instead of constantly fighting yourself.

Next: **“But nothing THAT bad happened to me...”**

💛 If this has made you look at trauma differently, comment **RELATE** or save this series to come back to.

I had a catch-up recently with a previous hypnotherapy client of mine, and it was SO lovely to hear how well things are going for him.

He originally came to me because he wanted to leave his current career and have the confidence to build something completely different - a successful property renovation and rental business.

At the time, he was struggling to move forward with the property side of things and feeling trapped in a career he no longer wanted to be in.

We used a combination of tools, including Hypnotherapy, EFT and the Law of Attraction, to work on the beliefs and blocks that were keeping him stuck, whilst creating the energy of abundance, confidence and success.

I also created a personalised Mind Movie for him to watch every day - filled with images, affirmations and all the things he was working towards bringing into his reality.

Fast-forward a few months...

He has built a successful property business, giving him and his family greater financial stability. He’s now on the verge of leaving his old career AND feeling inspired to build a second business - which I have every confidence he’ll throw himself into too!

It’s been so wonderful to see the transformation since our sessions.

From feeling stuck and hopeless about how to move forward... to absolutely thriving and creating a completely different future for himself and his family. 💛

THIS is why I love this work so much.

When I first started my healing journey, I thought awareness was enough.
If I could just understand why I felt the way I did, I’d finally feel better.
If I could just say the right affirmations, I’d finally believe them.
If I could just talk about my pain, I’d finally release it.

And for a while, it helped.
Because being seen, heard, and validated is powerful. It soothes the nervous system and reminds us we’re not alone.

But what I didn’t realise back then was that I was still living in my head, trying to think my way out of trauma that lived in my body.

My deeper healing began when I started listening to my body’s whispers.
The tight chest. The lump in my throat. The exhaustion that no amount of rest could touch.

These weren’t random symptoms — they were messages.
My body was asking to be felt, not fixed.

Somatic work has been life-changing for me, and it’s still part of my own ongoing journey.
It’s helped me reconnect with the parts of myself I used to push away, and it continues to teach me that healing isn’t about being “done.” It’s about creating safety so that pain can finally soften.

This is the work I now share with others — gentle, body-based healing that helps you come home to yourself, one step at a time. 🌿

If this speaks to you, I’d love to invite you to join my mailing list. You’ll receive free resources, early access to healing sessions, and updates on my upcoming somatic trauma-informed coaching programme.

🌿 A little update from me...

I'm heading off to Morocco tomorrow for a much-needed break, so there will be **no Mental Wellbeing Club sessions until Monday 13th July**.

I'm also using the time away to reflect on the future of the Club and the support I offer. I'd really love your help.

💛 **If you've attended the Club**, I'd be so grateful if you could leave a comment below or send me a message with a few words about your experience. What have you enjoyed? What has helped? Is there anything you'd like to see more of? Your feedback helps me shape the sessions and gives others the confidence to take that first step.

🌿 **If you've been thinking about coming but haven't made it along yet**, I'd love to hear from you too.

I'm exploring a few new ideas, including:

✨ An evening Mental Wellbeing Club.
✨ One-off Nervous System Reset sessions, bringing together some of the therapies I use in my 1:1 work - such as EFT, hypnotherapy, guided relaxation and other calming techniques to help soothe the nervous system and reduce stress and overwhelm.
✨ Online sessions for those who find it difficult to get out or would simply prefer to join from home.

I'm passionate about creating support that people genuinely want and need, so your thoughts will really help shape what comes next.

**If you could create your ideal wellbeing session, what would it include?**

I'd genuinely love to know.

Thank you to everyone who's supported me so far - whether you've attended a session, shared a post, recommended the Club or simply followed my journey. It really does mean a lot.

Have a wonderful couple of weeks, and I'll see you soon! 🌿

Did you know that the Nervous system's primary role is to scan for safety and danger to keep you safe?

It seeks to avoid anything that feels unsafe whether that's real or imagined, physical or emotional.

It develops behaviours to protect you from something potentially dangerous or painful.

Today, in club, we explored what protective behaviours are present in us that once served their purpose perfectly, but are still running and now outdated.

We did a powerful guided hypnotic meditation to address the part of us within that shows up with the behaviour and explored ways in which that part can show up more constructively.

This approached is based on Internal Family Systems which recognises that the nervous system holds many versions of us - usually created in moments of trauma. Parts of us that we can communicate with, with understanding and compassion to make positive, lasting change.

What protective behaviours are you aware of within you?

Scientists have made an extraordinary discovery revealing that the human heart contains its own independent nervous system composed of more than 40,000 specialized neurons, earning it the remarkable scientific designation of the intrinsic cardiac nervous system or what researchers are now calling the heart brain.

This heart brain does not simply respond to signals sent downward from the head brain. Research conducted at the HeartMath Institute confirmed that the heart actually sends significantly more neural signals upward to the brain than it receives back in return, actively influencing emotional processing, memory formation, perception, and critical decision making functions at the highest levels of human cognition.

Scientists discovered that the heart generates an electromagnetic field approximately 60 times stronger in amplitude than that produced by the brain, extending several feet beyond the physical body and directly influencing the neural activity and emotional states of people in close physical proximity.
