📚Practice what you preach! 🙈

You can only do what you can do, when time is severely limited by work, life and demanding children you learn to make every minute count. Not only that but surprisingly the most effective exercises are *the ones you actually do*...!

Tonight's 20/30minute walk hack was pretty hard core, a real strength and conditioning session.

Equicore bands to improve core activation (I did tweak placement slightly)!
Overreach boot to add specific proprioception to improve hindlimb symmetry.
Off road hacking for balance and body awareness.
Long grass increases proprioception and encourages limb flexion.
Serpentine across the hill to encourage left and right recruitment of abdominals and freedom of thoracic sling.
Walk across the incline to further challenge thoracic sling mobility and engagement.
Walk/halt transitions up and downhill getting the core and thoracic sling working.

I love using the environment to challenge the body, keep the horse thinking, recruiting, changing muscle patterns voluntarily without bracing or relying on the rider for help. In fact when rehabbing horses the more unconventional the environment the more opportunities for useful proprioceptive input.

⏰This is your reminder to treat your central sulcus thrush 🐸

It's August and we've had no rain for weeks... Don't be fooled dry thrush can be just as nasty if not worse. If you want those feet to be comfy and toes to be flicky then trust me, you won't want to be compromising on this one.

Less than 5minutes a week and a £16 pot of Red horse Products Artimud that usually lasts me over a year (and I've collected 3 of them 🐎🐎🐎). Well worth the investment especially if you have a stable monster like me 💩!

🚨 Caught red-handed... I'm back at work! 🙈

It's been lovely catching up with everyone and hearing about all the progress you've made with your horses whilst I've been off. Thank you all for keeping me updated and for sticking with me during my second round of maternity leave! I've definitely enjoyed it more this time around, knowing I didn't have to worry about rushing back to work.

At the moment I'm not very flexible with appointments and I'm currently booking several weeks ahead, apologies it's not how I prefer to work. If you know your horse is due a session, please get in touch with plenty of notice so I can try to fit you in when you need me. Currently I am unable to take new clients unless you're very local or are organising a group booking on a yard I already visit. When time allows I'll open my books again.

If you've messaged me and I haven't replied, I am sorry! It usually means I thought I could squeeze you in, realised I couldn't, and then probably replied to you in my sleep instead. 🤦 Please do feel free to give me another prompt!

Finally, if you're looking for a physiotherapist for your horse (who isn't me! 😉), please do search the RAMP Register website to find a qualified practitioner in your area. (www.rampregister.org)

P.S. you might not believe it but the cleaner the horse the greasier my hands!

Thank you to E Green Veterinary Physiotherapy for sharing the views of fellow professionals. There is one therapy circulating in particular that poses a high concern amongst us due to it's mechanism of bypassing the sensory nervous system - in short an unqualified person could absolutely use the machine to the point of tissue damage and the horse could still look as if they were having a good time. If in doubt ask your professional first!

A MESSAGE OF CONCERN

It is becoming more and more concerning how many horses I am seeing with pain, inflammation, soreness and more serious complications following treatment with electrotherapy (mostly PEMF) by unqualified people.

I’m not posting this to discredit anyone, I am simply posting this because I care about the animals.

Qualified practitioners have spent years gaining their knowledge and qualifications, and often this includes specific time training to use electrotherapy correctly.

There are occasions when electrotherapy should never be applied and can cause further damage or complications to an already existing condition. Likewise using the incorrect frequencies can lead to increased muscle soreness and inflammation.

I urge anyone trying to offer their horse the very best care to do their homework about a person applying electrotherapy. The industry is not regulated enough and therefore machine manufactures will sell a machine to anyone and they can use it however they wish.
Just because your trainer has a machine doesn’t mean they have the knowledge to use it. I’m qualified as a physio, it does not mean I can do your farriers job!

It is a rising concern amongst qualified professionals throughout the country, so please be careful and keep your horses safe. 🐴❤️

🤰Maternity leave - see you next year! 🎆
A bit of a late post as I have already been on leave for over a week now! I'm not sure where that time went 🙈 but really looking forward to welcoming baby number 2 in December 🤰! It's definitely different second time around, I was so worried about loosing clients and starting again last time and it turned out I shouldn't have been. Thank you to all my wonderful clients for your ongoing support and well wishes, (I wont be gone too long don't worry) and look forward to following your progress and catching up with you all next year. All updates will be posted on my page, likely starting a phased return with group bookings on my main A303 Yeovil>Taunton route in the spring.

Needing cover?
I have several RAMP registered Veterinary Physiotherapy colleagues who have agreed to cover some clients for me and whom I am happy to directly recommend - do contact me and I will put you in touch. I am more than happy to share treatment protocols and notes ect with other professionals on request to ensure continuity of care. Feel free to contact me with any questions and updates - I will probably enjoy hearing from you ☺️.

A great couple of days helping to man the RAMP stand at BEVA congress, spreading the word about the importance of using regulated professionals. It was really interesting browsing the exhibition, learning about some new and really innovative products, chatting to other professionals from various disciplines and managed to sit in on a couple of interesting lectures too.

RAMP does such a fantastic job and relies heavily on volunteers, I am pleased to have been able to be a small part of it - looking for new applications for council if any of my Physio/Chiro/Osteo colleagues would like to get involved!

🎉Find us at BEVA stand D22!🎉

We've had a great first day talking to Vets, registrants and industry professionals. Looking forward to another busy day today!

🍂September (& October) Availability🍂

It's been a super busy summer seeing all of your lovely horses, Flo and I really enjoyed a last outing up to Hartpury for the RC dressage champs. September is looking busy, I am looking forward to spending a couple of days on the RAMP stand at BEVA and attending some CPD training days as well as trying to take a day or 2 for myself 🙈. If you are waiting for me to schedule appointments for you in Oct/Nov please feel free to prompt me.
