Last night (in my class) I gave my students a structure containing techniques, then created a situation where they had to use that vocabulary:
attack
defend
change roles
respond to the partner
feel where the body needs to go
explore how the movement is generated
adapt rather than simply reproduce
And importantly, I told them:
"This isn't a set routine. We're creating an opportunity to play."
That's a lovely teaching distinction.
Because once someone stops trying to remember "What comes next?", they can start asking:
"What's happening now?"
And that is Kung Fu.
