Ilfracombe has had its fair share of bad headlines over the years, but those headlines don't tell the whole story.

I'm incredibly proud that Ilfracombe has been shortlisted as one of just 15 towns from almost 400 applications to compete for the very first UK Town of Culture. Each shortlisted town will now receive funding to develop its bid, and I honestly couldn't think of a place that deserves this opportunity more.

What makes Ilfracombe special isn't just our stunning coastline or beautiful harbour. It's the people.

It's the volunteers, the artists, the musicians, the Sea Cadets, the yoga groups, the community organisations, the charities, the people who give up their time to make this town a better place. It's the incredible live music scene, the ukulele groups, the shanty singers, the pubs full of talented local bands, and the creative spirit that runs right through this town.

Like any community, we have challenges. But we also have kindness, creativity, resilience and heart. That's the Ilfracombe I know. That's the Ilfracombe I've fallen in love with.

I've met some of the best people in my life here, and I'm so grateful to call this my community.

Let's get behind this bid and show the rest of the country what Ilfracombe is really about.
