A strain "pulled muscle" is an injury to a muscle or to a tendon (tissue that connects muscle to bone). A strain happens when a muscle or tendon is stretched too far or is partially torn. โฃโฃโฃ
โฃโฃโฃ
Symptoms - pain, swelling, and having a problem moving or using the injured area. The calf muscle and achilles tendon are two common areas for a strain.โฃโฃโฃ
โฃโฃโฃ
It is important NOT to stretch a suspected strained muscle as this can make the strain worse.โฃโฃโฃ

A sprain is an injury to a ligament (tissue that connects bone to bone). A sprain happens when a joint is twisted or pulled and the ligament stretches or tears. This could happen if you roll over or twist your ankle. โฃโฃโฃ
โฃโฃโฃ
Symptoms - pain, swelling, and having a problem moving or using the injured area. These are similar to those of a strain. Ankles are very commonly sprained.โฃโฃโฃ
โฃโฃโฃ
If you suspect a sprain then stop what you are doing to assess the injury. Applying ice is OK for the first 24 hours! โฃโฃโฃ

A contusion is a bruise. It is injury to soft tissue that causes bleeding without breaking the skin. It is usually the result of taking a knock.โฃโฃโฃ
โฃโฃโฃ
Symptoms - discolouration of the skin, pain (which can be severe), and swelling. Contusions are not usually serious but a large, painful, or very swollen bruise can limit movement of a joint and will still require rest.โฃโฃโฃ

I understand that in some sports (football in this case) that players will want to do what they can to play on. If you take a knock or fall that results in pain, discolouration, swelling, slight mobility restriction around a joint it is advisable to stop what you are doing. If you are to try and carry on then apply ice/spray, compress the injured area, and accept the potential injury could be made worse which may have an impact on your work, training over the coming weeks, social life, etc.
