This week - 7 to 13 September - is Scottish Learning Disability Week, and a time to celebrate people with learning disabilities.

The theme this year from the Scottish Commission for People with Learning Disabilities (SCLD) is “I am here… to be seen”, reminding us that people with learning disabilities deserve to be seen, heard and included in all areas of life.

Dr Amelia Williamson, Psychotherapist, said: “This has been a year of change for the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) Learning Disabilities team driven forward by the findings from our stakeholder consultations process where we met and talked to children, parents and carers, school and agency staff around the community of children with learning disabilities.

“This consultation process enabled us to really ‘see’ and come alongside the children with Learning Disabilities and their families, and have conversations about what mental health means to to them, and what our service offers.”

What is Chronic Pain?

Pain is common – talking about it isn’t. Let’s change that.

Chronic pain (also known as persistent or long-term pain) affects around 38% of people in Scotland, yet many people still find it difficult to talk about.

It’s a recognised health condition that continues beyond normal healing time and can affect every aspect of daily life – from work and relationships to sleep, mood and confidence.

Understanding pain is an important step towards managing it. The more we learn about what is happening in our bodies, the more empowered we can feel to take positive steps forward.

John's story is a powerful reminder of why bowel screening matters. After a routine screening test flagged something for further investigation, despite feeling completely well, John was referred to Raigmore Hospital, where Mr Colin Richards and his team diagnosed an early-stage bowel cancer and carried out robotic-assisted surgery. John was discharged just 48 hours later, fully mobile and back to normal function.

Early diagnosis saves lives. If you're invited to take part in the Scottish Bowel Screening Programme, please take up the offer, even if you feel completely healthy.

Thank you, John, for letting us share your story, and thank you to our colleagues at the Scottish Bowel Screening Centre and Raigmore Hospital for the exceptional care you continue to provide every day.
