🦶 Falling is not just bad luck. And it's not inevitable either.

Around 1 in 3 older adults falls each year. That's a staggering number, and the consequences can be serious, especially when bone density is already reduced. Hip fractures in particular can have a real impact on independence and quality of life.

The good news? The research is pretty clear that this is something we can actually do something about.

Studies show that a combination of resistance training and balance work can reduce fall rates by up to a third, and in some populations by as much as half. Not by a little. By a lot.

Here's why it works on two levels:

First, stronger muscles and better balance mean you're less likely to fall in the first place. Your body gets better at reacting, stabilising, and catching itself.

Second, if a fall does happen, stronger muscles and denser bones mean your body is better equipped to absorb the impact. Think of it as building your own crumple zone.

There's also something worth mentioning that often gets overlooked: fear of falling. It's completely understandable, but when fear leads people to move less, it can actually make the problem worse over time. Rebuilding strength and confidence together is part of what good rehabilitation looks like.

This is exactly why we take a whole-person, evidence-based approach at Nessie Chiropractic. Whether you're recovering from an injury, managing osteoporosis, or just want to stay strong and independent as you get older, we're here to help you build a plan that actually fits your life.

Cochrane Review - Exercise for preventing falls in older people living in the community (2019):

Exercise programmes reduce the rate of falls and the number of people experiencing falls in older people living in the community (high-certainty evidence). The effects of such exercise programmes are uncertain for other non-falls outcomes. Where reported, adverse events were predominantly non-seriou...

🦴 Lifting weights with osteoporosis? The research might surprise you.

For a long time, the advice for people with osteoporosis or osteopenia was to keep things gentle and low-impact. The LIFTMOR trial turned that on its head.

This landmark study followed postmenopausal women with low bone density through 8 months of supervised, high-intensity resistance training, and found significantly greater improvements in bone mineral density at the lumbar spine and hip compared to a low-intensity programme. Not only that, but strength and functional movement improved too.

The catch? It works because it's supervised and progressive. The study was very clear that proper screening and expert guidance are what make this kind of training both safe and effective.

This is exactly the kind of evidence-based approach we love at Nessie Chiropractic. Understanding what your body actually needs, and building a plan that gets you there safely, is what we're here for.

Optimal osteogenic mechanical loading requires the application of high-magnitude strains at high rates. High-intensity resistance and impact training (HiRIT) applies such loads but is not traditionally recommended for individuals with osteoporosis because of a perceived high risk of fracture. The pu...

Due to an increased cost of doing business, and so we can afford to keep the longer, 30 minute appointment slots (with an hour for new patients), our prices are going up from the 16th of June 2025. This will bring our prices in line with our fellow Chiropractors and Osteopaths in the area who operate with similar length appointment slots.

A Standard Appointment will be £50 (30 minute slot)
A New Patient Consultation will be £80 (60 minute slot)

Unfortunately with the heavy snowfall last night and rain/sleet this morning I have been unable to get off my driveway this morning as I live on a hill where no snowploughs or gritters ever seem to go.

Nessie Chiropractic is therefore closed due to a snow day today. If you had an appointment today, you have been emailed regarding rebooking your apointment. My apologies for any inconvencience this causes.

Stay safe out there on the slippy stuff!

If you have an appointment with me tomorrow keep an eye out for a text message and email from me confirming whether I am able to make it in or not. I was unable to drive all the way home tonight and had to leave my vehicle parked along the road. It is meant to snow heavily all night in Evanton, turning to sleet or rain in the morning. This means the chances of me making it in to work tomorrow are slim.

I will confirm tomorrow morning whether I have to cancel the clinic for the day or not, so keep an eye out. Apologies for all inconvenience caused by this.
