A child’s body isn’t just a smaller version of an adult’s. Their head is proportionally larger, their neck muscles are still developing and their spine is more vulnerable.

That’s why rear-facing car seats offer the best protection. In a collision, the forces are distributed across the back of the seat - reducing strain on the neck, head and spine, and significantly lowering the risk of serious injury.

"How did they get so big, so fast? 🥲

If your child has had a growth spurt over summer, take a minute to check the fit of their car seat as well as their height and weight.

A few things to look at:

• Headrest: make sure it sits at the correct height for your child and supports the head as intended.
• Harness: the straps should come straight out from the shoulders, not from too far above or below.
• Tightness: once the harness is fastened, try the pinch test at the shoulder. If you can pinch a fold of the harness between your fingers, it needs to be tightened.

Small adjustments can make a big difference to the fit.

And remember: growing taller doesn’t automatically mean it’s time for the next car seat. If your child still fits within the limits of their current seat, keep using it as intended.

It’s always so rewarding when I get the pleasure of helping a childminder sort out their car seats.

Dedication to keeping all the children in their care as safe as possible, and ensuring all age bases are covered, travelling rear facing.

This childminder has children that range from 6 months to 9 years.
We added two Axkid Movekids, kept a joie spin seat and she already has a booster cushion and a high backed booster for the older children.

The Axkid Movekid was set up in the front with the air bag disabled, maximum recline and minimal leg space for the little ones. In the back we removed the insert, took off the recline and added extended leg space for the older children.

At DMB car seats we want to help everyone keep children as safe as possible for as long g as possible. That’s why we always give discount to childminders, foster carers and nurseries that need multiple seats for the children in their care.
