Rolled your ankle and looking for accelerated return to play/activity/duty?

Acute ankle sprains often result in swelling that can restrict movement and delay return to activity.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) may be used to help facilitate fluid movement as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation approach.

In some cases, I often apply kinesiology tape as an adjunctive lymphatic taping technique. The tape gently lifts the skin, creating additional space within the superficial tissues and complementing lymphatic drainage strategies.

Less swelling. Better movement. Smarter recovery.

Following ACL reconstruction, shoulder surgery or other orthopaedic procedures, swelling can sometimes become a significant barrier to movement and rehabilitation.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) may be used alongside your rehabilitation programme to help support fluid movement and improve comfort during recovery.

By addressing swelling early, patients may find it easier to engage with their exercise programme and progress through rehabilitation milestones.

Contact us today to book your MLD to optimise your post operative outcomes.

Our physiotherapist Dan Donnelly offers Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) every Tuesday 8am–7pm.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is NOT a massage.

It is a specialised, gentle manual technique designed to facilitate lymphatic flow and assist the body's natural drainage processes.

MLD is commonly used to help manage swelling and tissue congestion following injury or surgery, and may be incorporated into a broader rehabilitation programme where clinically appropriate. Ultimately, the pressure from fluid leads to pain which can significantly hamper rehab, and this technique is an excellent method to expedite post op outcomes, or to address tissue swelling after an ankle sprain or ligamentous tear.

Its light, precise application is very different from traditional massage techniques.

Emerging research suggests that fascia is a highly dynamic tissue with important mechanical and biological functions.

Some studies have proposed that sustained fascial techniques may influence the ground substance of fascia, allowing tissues to become more pliable under gentle load.

Research has also explored potential relationships between fascial treatment, mechanotransduction (including piezoelectric properties within connective tissues) and inflammatory signalling pathways, including Interleukin-8 responses. These areas remain active fields of investigation.

What we do know is that many clients report improvements in mobility, comfort and body awareness following treatment, which can be maintained by a well designed rehab and conditioning plan.

Gentle. Precise. Effective.

⚠️ The "Straightjacket" Effect of Fascia

When fascia becomes restricted, it can place significant tension on surrounding tissues.

Many therapists describe this as a "straightjacket" effect, where excessive fascial tension may contribute to feelings of stiffness, pressure, reduced mobility and discomfort.

These restrictions can influence movement quality and may affect local circulation and tissue glide.

Myofascial Release uses gentle, sustained pressure to help restore mobility within these tissues and improve overall movement efficiency.

Treat beyond the symptoms, and move freely again. This is a great tool to complement your S&C work.

Our physiotherapist Dan Donnelly offers Myofascial Release here every Tuesday 8am–7pm.

Fascia is the connective tissue network that surrounds and supports muscles, nerves, blood vessels and organs throughout the body.

Myofascial Release is a gentle, sustained, hands-on treatment that focuses on restrictions within this fascial system.

Unlike sports massage, it is typically performed without oils and does not rely on aggressive pressure. Instead, therapists use slow, sustained techniques to encourage fascial tissue to soften and adapt.

The goal? Improved movement, reduced tension and greater comfort. This is perfect for injury prevention and rehabilitation, and a great way to reduce pain and spasm after heavy training sessions or training blocks.

Book your session today.
