More Than Just Training:

Oliver’s Legacy at Nayland Care 💙

We are incredibly proud to announce that Chelsey and Kelly are now certified Oliver McGowan Tier 2 Facilitators. As we prepare to roll this out to our entire team, we want to share why this mission is so important to us.

The Story Behind the Training This program is named in memory of Oliver McGowan, a bright and kind young man whose life was tragically cut short. His death highlighted a significant gap in the health and social care sector: a lack of specific understanding and skills among staff when supporting people with a learning disability and autistic people.

Why It Matters! Following a tireless campaign by Oliver’s mother, Paula McGowan OBE, this training was developed to ensure that no other family has to go through what theirs did. It is designed to:

Improve Communication: Ensuring staff truly listen and adapt to individual needs.

Prevent Avoidable Harm: Equipping teams with the knowledge to provide safe, informed care.

Promote Inclusion: Standardising high-quality care across the entire sector.

By bringing this training in-house at Nayland Care, we are committing to Oliver’s legacy. We want every person we support to feel understood, safe, and respected.

The social care sector is at a crossroads. While we try to steer clear of politics, we can't ignore the impact that current Home Office policies are having on our workforce.

We’re encouraged to see MPs like Jeremy Corbyn raising awareness of how recent changes including the closure of the overseas recruitment route and extended settlement periods threaten the stability of care in the UK.

Our care workers go above and beyond in often challenging circumstances. To provide the best care for our community, we need a system that supports and retains the dedicated professionals who have moved across the world to help us. Respect for the sector means respect for every worker within it. 🤝

Former Labour leader and Independent MP Jeremy Corbyn has written to the Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, raising grave concerns about the government’s proposed changes to UK immigration rules.

What is being proposed?

• The standard ILR qualifying period increasing from 5 years to 10 years
• Health and Care Worker visa holders potentially facing a 15-year wait for settlement
• Increased risk of exploitation under employer-tied visa models

These proposals would have a devastating impact on thousands of health and social care workers who already face low pay, insecurity, and severe workforce shortages — despite their vital contribution to the UK economy and society.

Key demands raised by MPs and affected communities:

• Protect the 5-year ILR route
• End employer-tied visas that allow exploitation
• Introduce a Fair Pay Agreement for care workers

🎄 Companionship Care: Bringing the Festive Spirit Home!
This week, our fantastic Team Leader Jo and client Alison have been getting into the festive spirit together! 🎅 They spent Alison's companionship visit today writing Christmas cards and enjoying a good chat.

Companionship care is so much more than just a visit—it’s about creating meaningful connection and sharing enjoyable moments, especially during the colder months and the holidays.

✨ The Value of Companionship Care

For many, having a friendly, regular face to share activities with can make all the difference. Our companionship services are tailored to each person and can include:

Social Activities: Having a cuppa and a chat, writing letters/cards, enjoying puzzles, or reminiscing over photo albums.

Hobbies: Supporting hobbies like gardening, knitting, or reading.

Outings: Accompanying clients on walks, to the shops, or to social groups.

Meal Preparation: Sharing time cooking or preparing simple, nutritious meals together.

These regular visits help to combat loneliness and ensure our clients are engaged, cheerful, and feeling connected to their community and to the season.

The difference a face-to-face session makes! 🧑‍🏫

We were delighted to have our in-house trainer, Michelle, deliver an engaging First Aid course for our care staff today, focusing on essential life-saving skills. A big thank you to Michelle for the fantastic session, and well done to all our learners for their commitment!

We pride ourselves on moving beyond generic online modules. Our commitment is to high-quality, practical training delivered by one of our three expert in-house trainers in our fully equipped training room. This ensures the learning is relevant, practical, and truly embeds the skills needed to keep our clients safe.

🌟Compassionate End of Life Care 🌟

We are incredibly proud to share that all of our wonderful care staff have now completed our bespoke End of Life Care training sessions this month!

These sessions weren't just standard training; we engaged in incredibly interesting and in-depth discussions about death, dying, and how to provide the most supportive and dignified care during a person's final chapter.

Crucially, we focused on the vital importance of co-ordinated end of life care—ensuring seamless communication with other professionals—and best practice for symptom management to maximise comfort and quality of life.

We also explored how our own religious and cultural beliefs shape practice, ensuring everyone on our team is ready to deliver high-quality, person-centred, and truly compassionate end of life care for every individual and family we serve.
