Our Farm Vet Alice recently went out to see this bullock with a mass on its eyelid that unfortunately had become so large it could no longer see.
These masses are likely benign warts caused by Bovine Papilloma Virus, which is commonly seen in UK cattle. Usually young animals are affected, as older animals build up immunity over time.
BPV warts usually disappear without treatment within 12 months so surgical removal isn’t necessary. However, in this case, the bullocks could no longer see out of its eye and was struggling to keep up with the herd.
After some pain relief, a local anaesthetic nerve block and thorough surgical cleaning of the site the bulk of the wart covering the eye was removed and sutured back to allow the animal to have a normal field of vision. The other warts not interfering with vision were left to disappear over time.
This bullock should be feeling much better now it can find its way around again!
