🌸 HOME BIRTH IS BACK IN THE SCOTTISH BORDERS! 🌸

I have some really positive news to share with families across the Borders. 💕

NHS Borders’ Home Birth Service is officially resuming from today — 31st August 2026! 🏡👶

After the suspension of the service, I know many women and families have been waiting for this news, and I am so pleased to see home birth once again being offered as an option.

⚠️However, the service is only returning in a phased way to begin with:

✨ Home births will initially be available Monday–Friday

✨ This applies to women receiving midwifery-led care who are assessed as suitable for a home birth

✨ The service is not yet back to full availability, so weekends and out-of-hours home births are not currently included

✨ NHS Borders says it hopes to restore a full service later this year, as staffing improves

I recognise that this may feel like a huge step forward for some families, while others may still be disappointed that the service isn't yet fully restored.

For anyone planning a home birth, I would encourage you to speak openly with your midwife about your wishes and ask what options are currently available to you. Your individual circumstances and care needs will be considered as part of those discussions.

💗 Border Home Birth Support will continue to advocate for safe and accessible choice of birth for families across the Scottish Borders.

The return of the service is something to celebrate — and we hope this is the first step towards full 24/7 home birth provision being restored for Borders families. 🏡✨
