Several private residences in the North East. Why is your page Gosforth and Jesmond? We live and work in this area (except one of us who lives in Edinburgh and divides her time between there and Gosforth). Gosforth and Jesmond have fascinating histories, and we are curating and sharing them through our blog. How are you qualified to carry out this type of work? Between us, we have over forty years of experience in research and business, including experience working in museums and with old buildings regarding funding eligibility. We have experience in graphic design, which we use to illustrate our folios and highlight period properties with our House Portraits. We aim to connect as many people as possible to their personal heritages. We love digging through the archives and helping people connect to their own histories either by who they are or where they live. We help people recognise and document their heritage through our carefully researched folios and illustrations.. We like our customers to feel like they have a part in the story, and we present our research in an inviting and involving style. Why is heritage important? Heritage can be anything that a person, family, business or community values enough to protect it for the future. Heritage is important because it gives us a sense of singular and communal identity.

Every house has a story.
But often, the most fascinating chapters are the ones hidden behind the bricks, walls and old photographs.

A house historian helps uncover the people who lived there, the trades they followed, the changes they witnessed and the moments that shaped a home over generations.

Because discovering a property’s past isn’t just about dates and documents…

It’s about creating a deeper sense of place.

This photo landed in our inbox recently from a happy client who has thier House History displayed in the office.

What makes it special is that the original house plans we uncovered during our research are framed in his reception area too, and the full chronology is on the coffee table for visitors and customers to flick through.

This was actually a first for us. Instead of a traditional box, we created a large A1 piece combining a detailed illustration of the property with full history.

For us, this is what house history is really about. Pulling history out of the archives so people can build a stronger connection with the places that matter to them.

Understanding the story of a building gives it a whole new meaning and creates a real sense of place.

Seeing this property's story become part of the everyday life of the business that now occupies it is exactly why we love what we do.

Thank you for sharing this with us🙏

Finding out the history of your home is one of the most fascinating parts of owning a property.

Across the UK, homeowners are increasingly searching for answers such as:

When was my house built?

Who lived here before me?

What did my street look like 100 years ago?

Has my property changed over time?

There are two main ways to uncover these answers: doing the research yourself (DIY) or using a professional house history research service.

This guide compares both approaches so you can decide what works best for your time, budget, and interest level.

Medieval Newcastle fact you probably didn’t know…

Shoemakers didn’t only “make shoes”, they could have been part of the Cordwainers Guild, a powerful group that controlled training, trade rights, and even who could become a freeman in the city.

Guild records can link back to everyday people… and even houses still standing today.

👉 Here’s the question, though:

Would you want to know if your house was connected to a trade, guild, or working family like this?

Drop a comment. I’m curious how many people would actually dig into that side of their home’s history 👀

We've updated our blog post. You can read the expanded version 👇

One of our first House History commissions was for a terrace house on Woodbine Road in Gosforth.
Plans were submitted to Gosforth Urban District Council for the building of a pair of houses, on Woodbine Road in 1898. The plans reveal that planning permission was applied for by J. Alexander. It is likely that this was Joseph Alexander, a joiner, living at 33 Ivy Road, Gosforth.

The architect was James Cackett. Cackett was born at West Hartlepool in 1860. He was to become the most prominent Tyneside architect of his generation.

With his partner Robert Burn Dick and later R.MacKellar he designed many important buildings/structures in the area including The Laing Art Gallery and the Tyne Bridge.

Properties on this street were built at different times our commission and its neighbouring house were among the last to be built.

KENTON LODGE-BYGONE Kenton circa 1765

How idyllic is this!?

Built for John Graham Clark early 1790s

The Clark family then moved to Kenton Hall 1809/10. Their daughter Mary married Edwin Barrett and this couple became the parents of Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

Every building has a story even the ones we walk past every day without a second thought.

This week, we’re stepping back in time to explore the story behind Punshon’s Newsagent in Gosforth. From busy Saturday mornings and local memories, to the people who ran the shop and the changes it has seen over the decades, it’s a reminder that everyday places are full of hidden history waiting to be uncovered.

It’s exactly what house history research is all about: piecing together the lives, businesses, and communities that shaped the places we know today.

Take a look at the full story on our blog titled Punshon Newsagent

Because behind every house, shop, or street… there’s always more to discover.
