SCIATICA – IT’S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT YOUR BACK ⚡

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes irritated or compressed, causing pain that can travel from the buttock down the leg.

The cause can vary — from the lower spine to surrounding muscles such as the piriformis, which can irritate the sciatic nerve.

Osteopathic assessment looks at why the nerve is being irritated, not simply where you feel the pain.

Almost 3 decades of osteopathic experience.

YOUR BODY WORKS BEST WHEN IT’S ALIGNED 🦴

Good biomechanical alignment allows forces to travel efficiently through the body — known as axial loading.

When alignment changes, even slightly, those forces can be redistributed, increasing strain through joints, muscles and surrounding tissues.

Osteopathic assessment looks at the whole body, identifying areas of restriction and imbalance and helping restore more efficient movement and load distribution.

Small changes in alignment can make a big difference to how your whole body moves and feels.

🐴 ACUPRESSURE FOR HORSES – A GENTLE ADDITION TO OSTEOPATHIC CARE 🐴

As a qualified British Medical Acupuncturist, I use medical acupuncture in my human practice. However, current UK regulations do not permit me to use acupuncture when treating horses.

Instead, I offer acupressure as part of my equine osteopathic treatment.

Using a specially designed acupressure pen rather than needles, I stimulate recognised acupuncture and myofascial trigger points as part of a tailored osteopathic treatment plan.

In my extensive clinical experience, acupressure complements osteopathy particularly well. Whilst osteopathic treatment helps restore normal movement to the joints, acupressure can help reduce muscle tension and support soft tissue adaptation, allowing the body to better accommodate and maintain postural changes.

Every horse receives a thorough osteopathic assessment, and treatment is always guided by clinical findings, taking into account the individual horse's needs, discipline and performance demands.

⚡ BRITISH MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE – AVAILABLE AS PART OF YOUR OSTEOPATHIC TREATMENT ⚡

With almost three decades of osteopathic experience, I offer British Medical Acupuncture as part of your osteopathic treatment where clinically appropriate.

British Medical Acupuncture is based on modern medical understanding of anatomy, physiology and pain science. Used alongside osteopathy, it may help reduce pain, relieve muscle tension and improve movement in a range of musculoskeletal conditions.

Every patient receives a thorough assessment, and treatment is tailored to their individual needs. Whether osteopathy alone or a combination of osteopathy and British Medical Acupuncture is the most appropriate approach will depend on your symptoms and clinical findings.

🚫 YOU DON'T HAVE TO LIVE WITH PAIN. 🚫

With almost three decades of osteopathic experience, I've seen how small changes in the body can have a big impact. A restriction in one area can alter the way you move, placing extra strain on muscles and joints elsewhere.

I love this image because it perfectly illustrates how one small imbalance can affect the whole body.
Whatever your age, osteopathic care can help. From newborn babies and children to adults.
Whether you're an office worker, farmer, equestrian, manual worker, runner, athlete or retiree, treatment is tailored to your individual needs.

Whether it's back pain, neck pain, headaches, joint stiffness or a sports injury, identifying the underlying cause is the key to effective treatment—not just treating where it hurts.
🎁 Book your FREE 15-minute Spinal Health Check and let's find out what's really causing your pain.

🔥 Not all sciatica comes from your back! 🔥

Sciatica is irritation of the sciatic nerve. That irritation may come from your lower back... or it could be caused by the piriformis muscle deep in your buttock compressing the nerve.

Same nerve. Similar symptoms. Different cause.

Don't guess—get assessed. Identifying the source of your pain is the first step towards effective treatment.

Horse & Hound article – Owners need to take some responsibility

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18pkdGW6bS/?mibextid=wwXIfr

A really important article and one that certainly resonates with me.

Having worked in the equine industry for over 30 years, I’ve learnt the importance of good clinical reasoning, recognising the boundaries of my scope of practice and working within them.

As an equine osteopath, if I see something that concerns me or feel needs further investigation, I refer back to the vet and always keep them informed. Equally, there are times when a veterinary physiotherapist, specialist rehabilitation centre or another suitably qualified professional may be better placed to help, and I have no hesitation in referring on.

For me, it’s about keeping everyone in the loop and working as a team. Knowing when not to treat is every bit as important as knowing when to treat.

At the end of the day, the horse’s welfare has to come first. Always.
