People seek counselling for many different reasons.

It might be something that’s happened recently, something you’ve carried for years, or simply feeling like you’re struggling and not really knowing why.

Counselling can help with anxiety, depression, trauma, bereavement, low self-esteem, difficult relationships, stress, burnout, identity, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, or feeling lost and unsure of yourself.

Sometimes having the right space, with the right person, can be the beginning of things feeling different. 🌿

September Su***de Prevention Month 💛

Sometimes, the person who is struggling the most is the person you’d least expect.

Suicidal thoughts don’t always look like a crisis. They can look like withdrawing, feeling like a burden, losing hope, becoming unusually quiet, or saying, “I’m tired.”
You don’t need to have the perfect words to reach out to someone.
Ask twice.
Listen without judgement.
Take them seriously.
Remind them they don’t have to face it alone.

A conversation really can make a difference.

Starting secondary school can be a time of uncertainty. It’s normal for children to go from feeling happy and confident one minute, to feeling nervous or anxious the next.

As a parent or carer, here are just a few things you may be able to do to help your child to find their feet during this transition.

Here are just a few things to remember when supporting your child:

🩷 Exploring

Encourage your child to explore their thoughts and feelings. Let them know they can talk openly about their feelings, both positive and negative.

"What are you looking forward to?"

"Are you worried about anything?"

🩷 Empowering your child

Building your child’s independence and confidence will help them with the transition.

Give your child lots of praise when you notice things they're doing well. The greatest source of strength for any child going through change is knowing that they can fall back on the love and support of their loved ones.

🩷 You don't have to have all the answers

Find out what the school is doing to support the transition to secondary.

Ask if there is school counselling if your child is struggling, or other support in your area.

And be there for yourself, too. There are more resources for parents and carers on our Mentally Healthy Schools website.

What do you think can be helpful from parents - or any trusted adults?

Sit with your feelings 🩵
Comment ‘Feelings’ for the link of this image ⬇️

- Acknowledge & allow yourself to feel
- Allow emotions to exist without judgement
- Bring awareness to the way you talk to yourself
- Stay mindful & present
- Practice compassion
- Learn to identify what you are feeling
- Don't label your emotions as “good" or "bad"
- Get curious (How would you support your best friend in this situation?)
- Validate what/why you are feeling
- Notice where you're feeling it in your body
