The summer holidays can bring out a completely different side of our children.

For some, less routine can mean more overwhelm, frustration, anxiety or bigger emotions.

For others, you might notice the opposite.

They seem calmer.
They sleep better.
There are fewer meltdowns.
They seem more like themselves.

Both can tell us something.

When school stops, lots of things change at once — the routine, expectations, social pressures, sensory demands and the predictability of knowing what each day will look like.

So rather than only looking at the behaviour, it can be helpful to get curious about what has changed around them.

What are they missing?

What pressure has disappeared?

What might they be finding difficult?

Sometimes children can't explain what's going on underneath the surface, but their behaviour can communicate it for them.

If you've noticed changes in your child over the summer and you're wondering whether they might benefit from some extra support, I offer creative counselling for children and young people.

A safe space where they don't always have to find the right words to express how they're feeling.

Send me a message if you'd like to chat about how I could support your child.

Not every young person feels comfortable in a therapy room and that’s okay.
Creative Trails offers a softer approach. A chance to talk, move, and simply be in nature.
Calming. Creative. Grounded in connection.
For young people who need space, gentleness, and support that meets them where they are.

Welcome To My Part Of The Internet,

Hi, I'm Sam Rawlings.

I'm a Creative Counsellor, mum, grandma, published author, podcaster and amateur dramatics enthusiast.

Creativity isn't just something I use in my work, it's part of who I am.

Growing up, I often felt unheard, and I know how much difference it can make when someone really listens. That experience has shaped the counsellor I am today.

I've been described as quietly ferocious and professionally playful. I care deeply about the people I work with and believe that compassion, curiosity and creativity can open conversations that words alone sometimes can't.

I don't believe you need fixing.

Whether I'm supporting a child, a teenager or an adult, my role isn't to tell you what to do. It's to walk alongside you as you make sense of your experiences, discover your strengths and find your own way forward.

There isn't a one-size-fits-all approach. Some people want to talk. Others connect through creativity, movement, nature or simply sharing space together. We'll find what works for you.

My counselling is also shaped by more than 25 years of working in supportive roles with children, young people, adults and families. Every experience has reinforced my belief that change happens through connection, not perfection.

I hope the people I work with leave feeling lighter, more connected to themselves and knowing they don't have to face life's challenges alone.

And if we can share a little laughter along the way, even better.

I'd love to hear from you.

Your GCSE results do not define you.

To every young person receiving their GCSE results today…

You are so much more than the numbers on that piece of paper.

Maybe you got exactly what you hoped for.
Maybe you surprised yourself.
Maybe you’re disappointed.
Maybe things didn’t go the way you’d planned.

Whatever you’re feeling today, it’s okay.

Your results are one small part of your story. They don’t measure your kindness, creativity, resilience, determination or everything you’ve overcome to get to this point.

There is more than one route to where you want to go, and sometimes the route you didn’t plan for can lead somewhere pretty amazing too.

Be proud of yourself for getting here.

And to the parents and carers supporting a young person today — they might need celebration, reassurance, space, a hug, or simply someone to listen.

Results matter, but the young person behind them matters so much more.

Congratulations to everyone receiving their GCSE results today. 🤍

Behaviour is often communication.
When children seem withdrawn, angry or overwhelmed, they are usually telling us something important.
I share support and guidance in my free 5-day child wellbeing email series.

When your child says “I’m bored”… it can be tempting to jump straight in and fix it.

Find an activity.
Put something on.
Suggest somewhere to go.
Fill the gap.

But boredom isn’t always something we need to solve.

Sometimes, that quiet space gives children the chance to slow down, use their imagination, explore their own ideas and work out what they actually want to do.

It can also be a chance for us to notice what might be sitting underneath the “I’m bored”.

Are they looking for connection?
Feeling unsettled?
Overstimulated?
Struggling without their usual routine?

Especially during the school holidays, a little boredom can actually be a really useful thing.

So next time you hear “Muuuum, I’m bored!”, before rushing to fill the space, try getting curious about it instead.

What happens in your house when the words “I’m bored” appear? Let me know in the comments.
