t h e t h i n g s w e c a r r y,
even when we stop 🍃

Half term has a way of reminding me just how much of our time is spent thinking about what everyone else needs.

The food, the plans, the lifts, the things we’ve promised to do, the things we’ve forgotten to do. Trying to make the most of the time together whilst somehow keeping everything else ticking along in the background.

I find that even when I do get a little time to myself, my mind doesn’t always get the memo that I can stop. As women I think we’re still always thinking ahead, mentally running through the list, wondering what we’ve missed or what needs doing next.

I’ve been thinking about how lovely it feels to have a little time when none of that is required of you. No decisions to make, nothing to organise, nowhere else you need to be - just a little space to breathe, let your shoulders drop and allow someone else to take care of you for a change.

It’s something I try to make more room for in my own life, and something I love being able to offer the women who come to see me at The Haven - sometimes we don’t need to add another thing to our list of things to do.

We need a little time when we can put the list down, and simply be.

have nowhere else to be?🍃

I had a spa day today, and it was great to have nowhere else to be, nothing to organise, no plans to think about and no list of things I needed to get done. Just being somewhere without having to think about what came next 😌

It made me realise how much I value that feeling, because so much of everyday life involves looking ahead, remembering things, making decisions and keeping everything moving. Even when we have a little time to ourselves, it’s easy for our minds to remain caught up in everything that’s waiting for us.

I think that’s something I’ve become increasingly aware of, both through my own experiences and through the women I work with. We don’t always need another thing to do, another routine to follow or another way to be better at looking after ourselves. Sometimes we just need a little space where nothing is expected of us.

It’s one of the reasons I’m so passionate about creating restorative experiences for women, because there’s something valuable about having the opportunity to pause, be cared for and simply be where we are.

As we move further into autumn, I’m reminded of the way this season is viewed through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine: a time associated with letting go, turning inward and recognising what we no longer need to carry. And that doesn’t have to mean making big changes - it can begin with allowing ourselves a little breathing room, a moment without rushing or perhaps an evening without filling every gap. Or dare I say a bit of time set aside when we don’t have to be the one thinking of everything!!

I’d love to know - when was the last time you had nowhere else to be?

When you’re used to being the one who holds everything together, it’s not always easy to switch off. Even when you finally have a little time to yourself, your mind can still be busy thinking about what needs doing, who needs you and what’s next on the to-do list.

Imagine arriving somewhere where, for the next hour and forty minutes, you don’t have to organise a thing, make any decisions for anyone else or be responsible for anything at all.

At The Haven, you can take your time choosing a ritual tea, breathe in its aroma and draw an affirmation card before settling into the warmth of the couch, wrapped in soft layers of comfort.

Then comes the lovely part - gentle neck stretches and a deep head and scalp massage, followed by an indulgent facial ritual combining warm cloths, facial massage, acupressure and facial reflexology, before I move down to your feet for foot reflexology.

Every part of Bloom is designed to help you settle into the experience, with time to simply receive, rather than think about what comes next.

And there’s no need to rush straight back out into the world afterwards. There’s time for a cup of tea, a gentle return to the day and a little space to gather yourself before you leave.

Bloom is more than time away from your to-do list. It’s time to feel cared for, reconnect with yourself and remember what it feels like to have a little space of your own.

Bloom | 1 hour 40 minutes | £80

If you’ve been craving this kind of time for yourself, I’d love to welcome you to The Haven. DM or comment ‘Bloom’ to find out more and I’ll do the rest.

…I left the office

This photograph was taken on a family holiday in Devon on the cusp of Autumn 2017. I look happy don’t I? But what you can’t see is how much I was struggling - I was completely burnt out.

I had nothing left in my tank. I was constantly tearful and even in this beautiful place with the people who mean the most to me in the world, I was unable to find any presence or joy and simply couldn’t seem to find my way back to myself 💔

I was supposed to return to work at the end of that holiday, but I just wasn’t able to (and as it turned out, I never returned).

I’d spent the previous 20 years building my career, and had worked so hard to create a life that felt secure. Looking back now, I can see that the process of letting go had begun long before I was ready to acknowledge it. There was a lot to grieve: the career I’d built, the identity that came with it, the sense of purpose and the future I’d imagined for myself.

What I understand now, that I couldn’t see at the time, is that even when the way forward feels impossible to imagine, things can change. You find ways to adapt, to make things work and to build a life you might never have planned for yourself. It’s not been an easy journey, but I can see now that this was the beginning of something very different.

As we move through autumn, I’ve been thinking about how letting go can involve grief just as much as growth. Sometimes we find ourselves in a period of change without knowing what we’re moving towards, and perhaps all we can do is take things one step at a time and allow ourselves to find our way.

I think it’s one of the reasons I’m so passionate about creating space for women to pause, reconnect with themselves and tend to their own wellbeing, because I know how easy it is to lose touch with yourself when you’re carrying so much, and how difficult it can be to find space when life demands so much of you.

If you’re in a season of change yourself, perhaps autumn is a reminder that letting go is part of life’s natural rhythm, even when we don’t know what comes next. 🍂

It’s a little of that breathing space I hope to offer women at The Haven, too.

a l i t t l e s u p p o r t . . .

This was how my yoga practice started this morning.

Restorative child’s pose, plenty of support, and absolutely no rush to move onto the next pose.

From there, I gradually moved into something a little deeper, but I wanted to begin by giving my body exactly what it needed (and I think there’s a little lesson in that for all of us).

I don’t think we always need to challenge ourselves more. Sometimes, we need to give ourselves permission to do a little less, soften into where we are and let ourselves be supported.

We can be so quick to think we need to push further, go deeper or do more to make something count. And during times of stress, injury or whatever, that can be exactly what our bodies don’t need.

So here’s a little reminder this morning that gifting yourself a little time to move in this way counts. This is yoga, too 🫶

The supported poses, gentler days and all the moments when we choose to work with our bodies rather than push against them - I think this applies to life just as much as it does to movement! We all need a little extra support sometimes.

So here’s a little reminder from my mat this morning to meet yourself where you are, and know that it’s enough.

h e a l t h d a y 🌿

I’ve always been a highly sensitive person (HSP), with anxiety going hand in hand with that for much of my life. And the more I learn about neurodiversity, the more that resonates too…

I feel things deeply, process a lot and can become overwhelmed when there’s too much going on. But I’m also capable, driven and someone who gets things done 💪🏻

For 20+ years, I pushed myself through a career and a way of living that didn’t always sit comfortably with who I was. I kept going because I needed to. But being able to function doesn’t necessarily mean you’re thriving, and just because you can keep going doesn’t mean it isn’t costing you something.

Eventually, the stress and sheer pace of everything took their toll. I hit burnout after returning to work following back-to-back pregnancies, into a promotion.

Retraining, stepping away from corporate life and creating a working environment that better suits who I am has been a huge part of my healing. Over the last 8/9 years, I’ve been learning to honour my sensitivity, work at my own pace and recognise what I need. I’ve even managed to let go of a lot of my perfectionism (recovering perfectionist here 🙋🏼‍♀️).

I still get overwhelmed. I still have days when everything feels like a bit much and days when I recognise what’s happening but don’t necessarily have the energy or ability to shift it. Days where no one would even notice any of that going on!

And today, is one of them. In fact, this whole week has been a week of ‘those days’!

Perhaps the difference now is that I notice, and I can soften my expectations and allow myself to be human. And this is a big part of why I work the way that I do; 3 days a week and no more than 5 clients a day because I know that’s my limit.

And this is part of why I do what I do. I know what it’s like to spend years pushing through, and how important it is to have a space where you can pause, exhale and reconnect with yourself.

So, tonight that looks like a takeaway and snuggling under a blanket. I just hope I can calm the mental chatter enough to enjoy my book for a bit.

It’s ok not to always be ok 🤍🫶

As I sit here in my treatment room taking a minute to reflect, I’m recognising how much this room has held over the last 10 years.

A space I nursed a baby in and watched a toddler bounce around, soon became the hub of the home as well as my business.

It’s a space where my business came alive. Starting with case study clients 9 years ago, many of whom are still regulars, this room has witnessed an evolution on every level.

Online content recording, live sessions, treatments, baby changing & photography for my baby classes, all alongside being a true family space - it’s officially been the hardest working room in the home.

It’s seen many many tears, but also witnessed so much joy and laughter and holds so many stories.

Sometimes you start to look at familiar things through a different lense, and right now I’m full of gratitude for 10 years in this space.

S O M E T I M E S experiences fill you with so much joy and gratitude - last Sunday was one of those days.

My second Spring retreat day of the year was such a special one! An absolutely gorgeous group of ladies, all with such beautiful energy. The weather, yet again, was wonderful, so much so that we enjoyed the closing sound bath outside (with the birds at times taking the lead, so vocal they were!)

I’m truly blessed to work alongside such talented, wonderful humans to deliver these days. and yet again bringing so much warmth and value to the day.

My heart is full 🥹

As I take a break from events over the remainder of the Spring, through summer, I’ll be returning at the end of September for my Autumn Retreat Day. I have just two spaces left. If you feel called to find out more comment ‘Autumn’ and I’ll do the rest.
