Thinking about a woodland burial? If so, there are a few things you’ll need to know before you go ahead 🌲

Make sure you take time to research suitable locations. While you do so, you’ll need to find out if your site is registered with The Association of National Burial Grounds, which is organised by a charity called Natural Death Centre.

When you contact the ANBG, it’s important to check if your chosen woodland site is properly certified. Make sure you ask them to see a certificate of your site.

You’ll also need to use a biodegradable coffin, and avoid using headstones. Instead, your loved one will be identified by a tree or some flowers, so they will be a peace with nature 🌷

Knowing what to say to someone who is grieving can be difficult. We want to show we care, but we also don’t want to say the wrong thing and cause further distress.

Here are some of the do’s and don’ts of offering grief support.

Do:
🔶 Let the bereaved know you are there for them
🔶 Respect the grieving person’s space by asking them what they need, and giving them time alone if they wish

Don’t:
🔶 Talk about your own losses and experiences- this can minimise the griever’s pain
🔶 Express platitudes or reassurances such as “they’re in a better place”- while these are well-meant, they are better left unsaid
