The next Community Catch Up's will be-

Friday 7th August (13:00- 14:00) Eckington Civic Centre

Thursday 13th August (17:00- 18:00) Ridgeway Sports and Social

Saturday 22nd August (14:00- 15:00) Green Lawns, Marsh Lane

Monday 24th July (17:30-18:30) Renishaw & Spinkhill Community Hall

These community catch up's gives you a chance to voice concerns, share observations, and provide feedback on policing in the area. The officers attending will provide crime prevention advice and ensure our policing strategies align with your community needs. If you have any concerns or worries that you wish to share but don't want to discuss it with the group, there will be an opportunity to speak to the officers separately. It doesn't matter where you live as long as it's in the Eckington parish, you can visit any of these events due to it being the same team that covers all four, this also covers Troway.

Preventing doorstep crime

Doorstep crime can include rogue traders, offering home improvement or gardening services, or bogus callers who claim to be the council, police, health carers or energy companies. If in doubt - keep them out.

Rogue traders may:
* Say they are in the area and have spotted a problem with your home or garden.
* Claim to have materials left over from another job, like paving or tarmac.
* Try to pressurise you to buy goods or sign up for services on the spot.
* Offer to carry out work cheaply, but charge an extortionate price after it has been completed.
* Offer to drive you to a bank so you can withdraw money to pay them.
* Provide false names, addresses or telephone numbers.
* A pedlar is someone who calls at your door to sell items that they have on offer. This can often include cleaning or household goods.
* By law, they are required to carry a pedlar’s certificate, which are issued by the police force in the area where they live.

Bogus callers may:
* Claim to be working for the council, water, gas or electric company. They could also say they are a nurse, doctor or from the police.
* Say they need to come into your home, or try to get you to go outside.
* Try to distract you so they can steal your money.
* Can be male, female or even children.

Tips to keep you safe
* Check the identity of any caller. Confirm who they are by calling the company they work for using number from the telephone directory or a bill.
* Ask a neighbour to come around to check them before you open the door.
* Tell them to come back at a time when someone will be at home with you.
* Keep doors and windows locked and use the door chain every time you answer the door.

| Duo who subjected man to vicious robbery in own home jailed for more than 20 years combined

A man and woman who subjected their victim to a vicious robbery inside his own home have been jailed for a combined total of more than 20 years.

Liam Rhodes and Sarah Hughes got into the home of a man in Springfield Close, Eckington, at about 7.30am on Friday 17 November 2023 and subjected him to a terrifying ordeal.

The victim opened his door to take his dog out for a walk when Rhodes and a second unidentified man pushed their way in and hit the victim with a metal bar and an object concealed within a sock.

The violence continued when Hughes entered the flat with a metal bar and struck him with it.

Rhodes went upstairs and started throwing the victim’s belongings down the stairs before hitting him over the head with a metal connecting rod from a shoe rack.

The unidentified man and Rhodes then dragged the victim into a kitchen upstairs where he was assaulted by a combination of kicks and punches.

Rhodes, Hughes and the unidentified man left the property with a number of items belonging to the victim, including a watch and his car keys, which were used to steal his BMW vehicle.

Officers later managed to recover the victims’ stolen BMW.

The victim, a man aged in his 20s, later attended hospital to be treated for head injuries.

Officers were called to attended, during which the victim said Rhodes was known to him and had been receiving threats from him prior to the attack.

Officers recovered a Ford Focus, which had the stolen watch inside it, and found the vehicle had been hired by Rhodes.

Hughes was picked out as one of the perpetrators during an identity parade.

Rhodes and Hughes were both arrested but gave no comment or remained silent during police interviews.

Rhodes (28), of no fixed abode, and Hughes (48), of Abbeyfield Road, Sheffield, were both found guilty of robbery and burglary with intent to inflict GBH.

Rhodes was jailed for 11 years and Hughes for 10 years and six months during a hearing at Derby Crown Court on Friday 26 June.

Temporary Detective Constable Alice Cundy, who led the investigation, said: “This was a truly terrifying attack which left the victim with numerous injuries to his head and face.

“The victim was attacked in his own home – a place of sanctuary where he should have felt safest.

“The actions of Rhodes and Hughes were vicious and we are pleased to see that they have been given long sentences, which reflect the severity of their crimes.

“I would like to pay tribute to the victim for their bravery and thank the investigation team for their professionalism during this investigation.”

Make your home a difficult target.

Inside your home

Make it difficult for your valuables to be taken.
Check who’s at the door and don’t open it if you feel anxious.
Leave some lights on or consider using plug timers if it will be dark before you get home.
Store keys, including your car keys, out of sight and away from the front door area.
Hide wallets, identity cards, passports and cash.
Mark or etch your property with your postcode, house, flat number or the first three letters of your house name.
Take photographs of your valuable items such as jewellery.

Outside your home

Install good outside lighting.
Scale back hedges or fences that prevent people seeing your home.
Lock doors and windows every time you leave the house, even when you are in the garden.
Cancel milk or other deliveries if you are planning on being away from home.
Ask a neighbour, friend or relative to keep an eye on your property if you are going away.
Keep ladders and gardening tools locked away to prevent them being used to gain entry to your home.
Secure bikes by locking them to an immoveable object inside a locked shed or garage.
Install a burglar alarm that can be seen on the outside of your property.

On your street

Be a good neighbour and check on your neighbours’ properties if they are away.
Remove any letters or deliveries from the letterbox or doorway.
Clear snow to your neighbours’ doors, or walk on their paths if they are away - footprints will make the house appear occupied.
Burglars look for the best house to target, so report anyone acting suspiciously.
Consider setting up or joining a
Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

🚨 Anti-Social Behaviour Baker Park Killamarsh – We Need Your Support 🚨

We have received reports of increasing anti-social behaviour in the area, including fires being deliberately set, litter being left behind, and underage drinking.

These incidents put people at risk, damage our local environment, and have a negative impact on the whole community.

We are asking all parents and guardians to please speak to your children and make sure you know:
• Where they are spending their time.
• Who they are with.
• What they are doing.
A simple conversation can make a huge difference and help prevent incidents before they happen.
If you witness anti-social behaviour or have information about those responsible, please report it to the police. Together, we can keep our community safe, clean, and enjoyable for everyone.

🚓 Community Speed Watch in Action 🚓
Yesterday, PCSO Furmidge and PCSO Rawson attended the Community Speed Watch sessions on Ford Road, Marsh Lane and High Lane, Ridgeway.

Community Speed Watch is a fantastic example of partnership working between residents, volunteers and the police. By working together, we can identify areas where speeding is a concern, raise awareness with drivers, and encourage safer driving habits. While the initiative isn’t about issuing fines, it is about educating motorists and making our roads safer for everyone.

A huge thank you to all of our dedicated Community Speed Watch volunteers who give up their time to support their local communities. Your commitment plays an important role in improving road safety and helping to reduce the risks associated with speeding.

📸A few pictures from yesterday's Crime Prevention Event at Ridgeway

PCSO Rawson, PCSO Furmidge and PC Hempsey had a fantastic afternoon at Ridgeway during their crime prevention event.

We had the opportunity to engage with lots of children at school kick-out time, chatting about staying safe and building positive relationships with their local neighbourhood policing team.

We also spoke with parents about simple but effective ways to help protect their vehicles and homes from crime, including remembering to lock doors, remove valuables from cars, and report any suspicious activity.

It was great to meet so many members of the community, answer questions, and hand out some crime prevention freebies along the way!

Thank you to everyone who stopped to have a chat. We always enjoy getting out into the community and working together to help keep our neighbourhoods safe.

🚓 Community Crime Prevention Event – Today!

Today, PCSO Rawson, PCSO Furmidge and PC Hempsey will be at the Ridgeway Sports and Social club carrying out a crime prevention event focused on burglaries and E-scooters.
