Reset, don’t restart.

If summer has knocked your routine off track, you do not need to start again from scratch. It’s normal that things drift.

Lower the bar: The first week back can be tiring, whether it is school, work, childcare or normal routines.

Focus on simple anchors:
• Easy breakfasts and repeat lunches
• Short walks or movement breaks - 3 minute dance break in between meetings can get you ready for the next call
• Simple dinners that need little thinking

Before September: Choose one thing that would make normal weeks feel easier.

You do not need a full reset. One useful habit is enough to begin with.

The sofa gets sticky.

Once you sit down after a busy day, it can be hard to get back up again.

Try this: Move before the sofa.

That might mean:
• Putting trainers on before dinner to remind you to go out
• Tidying the kitchen with music on. Dancing = bonus points!
• Walking round the block before changing into comfy clothes

This is not about willpower. It is about making the next good choice EASIER.

Image suggestion: Trainers beside a sofa, hallway shoes, TV remote with trainers nearby, evening walk, or someone putting shoes on by the door.

Bedtime has drifted.

That is normal by August. Later nights, lighter evenings and looser routines can shift sleep for children and adults.

The fix: Move things back gradually rather than trying to sort it all in one night.

Try:
• 10–15 minutes earlier every few nights. Combine with a wind down routine for all of you for bonus points!
• Getting bags, clothes or lunches ready the night before, and leaving them by the door to guard against the morning rush!
• Reducing screen time close to bedtime

Sleep affects mood, appetite, energy and motivation. A small shift now can make routines easier and life feel just a little less stressful.

Lunchboxes are coming back.

Rushed mornings are not the best time to invent a healthy lunch.

The fix: Choose 2–3 lunches you can repeat without thinking too much.

Ideas:
• Wrap + fruit + yoghurt
• Pasta salad + chopped veg
• Leftovers in a tub, if you have them

Lunch does not need to be different every day. Repeatable beats perfect.

Small prep helps: water bottles, pre-chopped veg, or pre-chopped fruit in tubs in the fridge.

Our Healthy Weight App is fully stocked with Lunch ideas. You can find the app in your app store by searching for NHS Ayrshire and Arran.

Dinner needs a shortcut.

Some evenings are not made for cooking from scratch.

That’s fine: Shortcuts can still help you build a balanced meal.

Useful options include:
• Frozen veg (it’s just as good as fresh!)
• Microwave rice (remember, check the pouches for the portions!)
• Tinned beans or lentils
• Ready-prepped salad
• Tinned fish

Simple formula: Filling + colourful + protein = yum!

That could be:
• Microwave rice + frozen veg + cooked chicken
• Baked potato + beans + salad
• Toast + tomatoes + tinned fish
• Lentils + frozen veg + pasta sauce

Healthy eating does not need to be impressive. It needs to work on ordinary days.

One shop. Three meals.

Food planning gets easier when one ingredient can do more than one job.

Try this: Pick one low-cost base and build a few meals around it.

Examples:
• Eggs: omelettes, boiled eggs, eggy bread
• Beans: beans on toast, baked bean chilli
• Frozen veg: pasta, omelette, stir-fry

You do not need a perfect meal plan. A few flexible basics can make the week easier.
